Employment Type: Permanent Faculty Vacancy ID: FAC0005409 Salary Range: Dependent on Experience and/or Qualifications Position Summary/Description: The Department of Pediatrics and UNC Children's Hospital is recruiting a pediatric palliative care physician to work on our Supportive Care Team and with the Complex Care Program. This is an Open Rank, Fixed term track faculty position. The Children's Supportive Care Team is a growing multidisciplinary consultation service that provides inpatient and outpatient care for children and families facing serious illnesses. The Complex Care Program provides outpatient care for children with broad based medical complexity and has been a leader in incorporating social determinants of health into medical care for those children. Leadership roles in parts of the program available for qualified applicants. Specific requirements for competitive applicants include being board certified/eligible in Pediatrics and Hospice and Palliative Medicine and have experience caring for children with medical complexity. Approximately 50% of this position will involve work in the Complex Care Program. The successful candidate will provide longitudinal, consultative, outpatient care to children with medical complexity ( CMC ). Additionally, the individual will collaborate with team members, including other physicians, nurse practitioner, social worker, nurse coordinator, lay/program coordinator to provide team-based care, advance program development through quality improvement and related activities, and continually build relationships with partners in the system of care for children with medical complexity. The UNC Children's Complex Care Program currently sees patients in Chapel Hill and in Raleigh. The program aims to be continually more accessible to CMC and families. * Clinical activities will include the following: * Evaluate and manage common clinical issues in children with medical complexity (including pain/irritability, aspiration, feeding difficulties, and abnormal muscle tone). * Provide routine care and troubleshoot common issues for children with medical complexity who are assisted with indwelling medical devices and/or use durable medical equipment and supplies. * Provide comprehensive perioperative assessment and management for children with medical complexity. * Develop and implement safety and emergency care plans for children with medical complexity. * Perform effective, team-based, patient-, and family-centered care coordination. * Advocate for children with medical complexity and their families. Approximately 50% of this position will involve work with the Supportive Care Team, the palliative care consult service at UNC Children's Hospital. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive, quality palliative care services to seriously ill children, teach learners from all disciplines, and participate in program development and quality improvement activities. * Clinical activities will include the following: * Provide high quality palliative care to children in both inpatient and outpatient settings * Perform comprehensive and focused evaluations of patients referred for palliative care consults * Identify and treat emergent and ongoing physical, emotional, and spiritual symptoms * Collaborate with interdisciplinary care team members including physicians, advanced practice providers, social worker, and psychologist; additionally with partnering supportive services including pastoral care and Child Life * Coordinate with consulting clinicians and services to develop and implement patient and family-centered care plans * Educate patients, families, and health care providers and staff about palliative care principles and practices
