Internship opportunities will be posted until February 28th, 2025 or until positions are filled.

The North Carolina Department of Public Safety has a unique internship opportunity for the Summer of 2025. This internship will be with the Office of Violence Prevention. Responsibilities will include:

  • Researching best practices in violence prevention and public health approaches
  • Collecting, synthesizing, and translating information to inform evaluation activities
  • Drafting reports, toolkits, presentations, and other documents

The internship is anticipated to start on May 19, 2025, and continue through July 25, 2025. The work schedule is up to 30 hours per week.

The rate of Pay is $18.00 per hour.

Students must be currently pursuing degrees in one of the areas indicated below in the Minimum Education and Experience Requirements section.

The mission of DPS is to safeguard and preserve the lives and property of the people of North Carolina through prevention, protection, and preparation. DPS is comprised of approximately 6,000 permanent positions and nearly 13,000 NC National Guard soldiers and airmen. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

DPS uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals.

The Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience (E&E) are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must demonstrate ALL of the following KSAs:
  • Knowledge of the intersections of public health and criminal justice as it relates to violence prevention
  • Research and/or analytical skills
  • Qualitative and quantitative evaluation experience
Management Preferences (Optional): These skills are not required but managers may choose to interview/select applicants who demonstrate Management Preferences.
  • Excellent writing skills

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Students must be currently pursuing degrees in one of the following areas:
  • Master of Social Work
  • Master of Public Health
  • Doctor of Public Health
  • Doctor of Social Work
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice/Criminology
  • Bachelor's degree in Public Health
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work
  • OR other related human services majors

Military Experience
  • Applicants seeking Veteran's Preference must attach a DD-214 Form (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty that includes Character of Discharge - Member 4 or Service 2 form) to the application.
  • Applicants seeking National Guard Preference:
    1. A current member of the North Carolina National Guard in good standing must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS).
    2. A former member of the North Carolina National Guard who served for at least 6 years and were discharged under honorable conditions, must attach either a DD256 or NGB 22.
