Department Summary

Infrastructure Services provides flexible, reliable, and secure traditional and cloud infrastructure services (network services, platform services, data center operations and management, and unified communications) enabling connectivity, productivity, and security for UCLA. Infrastructure services strives to optimize performance increasing storage, elevating the network, and reducing downtown.Network and Engineering Services manages the engineering and operations of the network infrastructure (e.g., wired/WAN, wireless, security/firewall) required to offer network connectivity, such as network cabling, routers, and firewalls. This includes connecting devices (e.g., Internet of Things devices) to the network, network access management, securing access to networks, and appropriate authentication (e.g., network registration systems, VPN, and NAC).
Position Summary

The Network Engineer, WAN/Wired will be responsible for designing and implementing the university's wide-area network (WAN) and wired network infrastructure to ensure connectivity across the entire campus. They will be involved in the design and apply system and data networks, such as local area networks, wide area networks, intranets, extranets, and other data communications networks.

The Network Engineer, WAN/Wired will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by ensuring UCLA's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the university's academic mission. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • Three years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations, or a related field. (Required)
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and supporting large-scale, complex network environments, preferably in an academic or research setting. (Required)
  • Experience with network equipment from major vendors such as Cisco, Juniper, and Palo Alto Networks. (Required)
  • Five or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, information technology or network operations. (Preferred)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  • Strong knowledge of wide and local area network architecture. Knowledge of IP routing protocols such us BGP, OSPF, ISIS, and EIGRP and network technologies such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, MPLS, SD-WAN, VPN, VLAN, and STP. (Required)
  • Knowledge of monitoring and automation tools to ensure the quick resolution of issues. (Required)
  • Strong knowledge of infrastructure requirements and components of wide and local area networks. Considerable knowledge of wide and local area network protocols and diagnostic tools. (Required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate technical information and ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. (Required)
  • Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with team members, stakeholders, and customers. (Required)
  • Strong organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects. Ability to work in a project-based environment using project management practices. (Required)
  • Strong demonstrated problem-solving skills; scopes solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines. Able to ask questions, gather information, evaluate options, and make decisions with integrity. (Required)

  • Bachelor's Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience/training. (Required)

  • Special Conditions for Employment

    • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement).

      The anticipated pay range for this position is $111,749-$127,897, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
