Research Area Specialist Intermediate for the Mixed Methods Program

The Department of Family Medicine is seeking candidates for a Research Area Specialist Intermediate position in the Mixed Methods Program (MMP). The Research Area Specialist Intermediate will work with MMP leadership, faculty, and staff on grant-funded projects and core MMP programs, including MMP training workshops, seminars, and methodological consultations. For this position, we seek candidates with strong qualitative and mixed methods research backgrounds with a genuine desire to learn and apply methods. The MMP leadership is committed to actively mentoring and training the Research Area Specialist in quantitative methods, qualitative methods, mixed methods, and mixed methods pedagogy. The MMP leadership will also support the analyst's professional development and networking with other mixed methods scientists and research analysts.

  • Support the execution of research grants and projects, including but not limited to mixed methods and qualitative study design, human subjects activities, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis, regulatory reporting, manuscript preparation and submission, dissemination of findings, and grant writing
  • Participate in "train the trainer" activities under the mentorship of expert MMP faculty members to support all MMP training and educational activities, including in-person and online workshops, works-in-progress seminars, and one-on-one consultations for learners across disciplines and stages of training
  • Gather and synthesize literature relevant to study design and content area
  • Summarize, interpret, and present findings in written, tabular, and visual formats for reports, manuscripts, and presentations
  • Attend and contribute to group and on-on-one meetings

We are seeking candidates who meet all these criteria:
  • A graduate degree in a health-related field and content, including but not limited to nursing, social work, medicine, public health, medical anthropology, epidemiology, health promotion, health behavior, or health education
  • 4-5 years of experience as a team member on qualitative or mixed methods studies/projects
  • Hands-on experience with collecting qualitative data from study participants via qualitative methods including one-on-one interviews
  • A strong commitment to developing a career as a mixed methods research analyst
  • A strong commitment to learning and implementing best practices in diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice to foster supportive learning teams
  • Consistently demonstrates professionalism in interactions with others

Intermediate - Graduate degree and 4-5 years of progressively responsible experience in qualitative/mixed methods studies.

Associate - Bachelor's degree and at least three years of relevant work/field experience


  • Basic understanding, experience, and/or formal didactic training in biostatistics
  • Formal mixed methods training (workshop, certificate program, mentorship)
  • Experience with qualitative analysis software, including data management and analysis (e.g., MaxQDA, NVivo, Dedoose)
  • Experience with all stages of the research cycle, including grant preparation and submission, study protocol development, and project management, including familiarity with human subjects training.
  • Experience with and/or a desire to advance skills in manuscript preparation and submission
  • Experience managing or supervising others


This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
