Research Technician in Wildlife Biology Hobart and William Smith Colleges Location: Syracuse/Geneva, NY Open Date: Jan 02, 2025 Description Hobart and William Smith Colleges (HWS) are recruiting a full-time (temporary) Research Technician in Wildlife Biology to work with Dr. Bradley Cosentino beginning March 2025. The research technician will work on a collaborative NSF-funded project on urban wildlife ecology and evolution with partners at SUNY-Environmental Sciences and Forestry. The goal of the project is to understand how urbanization changes ecological conditions that affect the evolution of coat color in eastern gray squirrels. The research technician's primary responsibilities will be to assist with fieldwork in Syracuse, NY, including 1) surveys of roadkill to compare mortality rates, morphological characteristics, and toxin loads between color morphs, and 2) collection and organization of camera trap data for demographic and behavioral analyses. The technician will also assist with assembling a historical database of color morph observations and collecting data from museum specimens to compare morphological characteristics between color morphs. The position is for five months at an hourly rate of $15-17, with the possibility of extension based on need and funding availability. The candidate should be based in or near Syracuse, NY. Housing is not supplied for this position. Essential Responsibilities: Travel in and around Syracuse, NY to collect field observations of road-killed squirrels and camera trap data. Assist with data entry and analysis of camera trap photos. Assist with assembly of a historical database of color morph observations. Assist with data collection from museum specimens. Other Information This is a full-time, 5-month, benefits-ineligible, hourly position (37.5-40 hours/week). Background check and Motor Vehicle Record check required. Pay range is $15.50 - $17.00 per hour. Qualifications Required qualifications BA or BS in biology or related areas, with experience in wildlife biology or ecology. Travel required. Must have a valid US driver's license and clean driving record, and be able to travel frequently for field work in Syracuse, NY with mileage reimbursed. Strong communication skills. Ability to work with a diverse group of collaborators. Able to walk for long periods in uncomfortable conditions to conduct field sampling. Familiarity navigating urban areas. Possess strong communication skills and be willing to take initiative Strong customer service orientation; positive, helpful, resourceful Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to unique social, cultural, and economic circumstances of others Highly reliable, flexible and adaptable Desirable qualifications Field experience in sampling wildlife and conducting scientific research, including visual surveys, trapping and handling, and camera trapping for wildlife. Experience managing a project involving frequent communication with a diverse group of collaborators, including scientists and non-scientists. Experience with data management with spreadsheets and camera trap photos.
