Teaching Specialist - Military Veterans

The position's focus is on activities in support of the Sustainability Studies Minor âœcapstoneâ course, SUST 4004. Tasks required include but are not limited to:

1) researching, locating and uploading student readings, 2)drafting, reviewing and grading student assignments as needed and with specific direction from faculty, 3) researching and preparing the goals and specific objectives for a variety of student projects to be undertaken during the semester for the benefit of community-based clients, 4) supporting communication between community-based clients and students and 5) organizing activities associated with the overnight field trip to western Minnesota as well as any other field trips or tours as directed by the faculty.

The Sustainability Studies Minor capstone course requires that the enrolled students engage in an interdisciplinary sustainability-focused project, gain understanding of systems-thinking and apply the sustainability knowledge and skills they have acquired to a real world sustainability question or problem. The Course Assistant activities will support the faculty efforts to ensure that these and other student learning outcomes are realized in SUST 4004.

25% Researching, locating and uploading student readings, assisting in putting these onto âœmoodle,â preparing powerpoints regarding readings and assignments as directed by faculty and related tasks

25% Drafting, reviewing and uploading assignments; grading student assignments as needed and with specific direction from faculty

10% Researching and preparing the goals and specific objectives for a variety of student projects to be undertaken during the semester for the benefit of community-based clients

10% Supporting communication between community-based clients and students, by coaching students, as a âœnear peerâ mentor, on how to communicate, following up with them individually, and checking in with community-based clients

10% Organizing activities associated with the overnight field trips and additional field visits or experiences

20% Supporting teaching and group work as directed by faculty, providing administrative support such as copying or locating materials, handling logistics matters regarding rooms, student presentations or similar matters

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience and strong ability in research, writing and analysis in an academic or similar setting.
  • Degree in sustainability or environmental science or environmental studies or related field.
  • Proven capability to be focused and task-oriented while working independently.
  • Familiarity with basic concepts of sustainability and systems thinking.
  • Willingness to learn quickly, ask questions for clarification and to adapt to changes in needs of student projects and interest and experience related to serving in a supportive âœnear-peerâ mentoring role in working with students as well as with student groups.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness at the collegiate level.
  • Experience assisting with curriculum development and in higher education settings.
  • Familiarity with University of Minnesota tools such as Canvas and other support systems (onestop, libraries, disability services, women's center, etc.)
