Research Engineer - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

We are seeking a Research Engineer for our interdisciplinary research project studying aging, balance control, and brain neural and vascular health that is sponsored by the National Institutes of Health. This project aims to understand the neuromechanical control of balance reactions in adults across the lifespan, and relationships to brain vascular health. Motivated candidates will have expertise in human biomechanical data collection and analysis, and knowledge in fundamental signal processing of kinetic and kinematic recordings.
This Research Engineer will play a vital role in conducting biomechanical and neurophysiologic human subjects assessments involving young, middle-aged, and older adults. They will be responsible for executing duties such as managing lab scheduling and supply inventory to keep the lab running efficiently.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • 45% - Independently conduct balance/gait biomechanics, EEG, and transcranial ultrasound experiments. Experiments involve balance and gait testing using cutting-edge biomechanical equipment, brain activity recordings using EEG, brain blood flow velocity recordings during exercise using transcranial Doppler ultrasound, and researching into publications for appropriate background and protocols.
  • 40% - Data analysis and pipeline development for biomechanical kinetic and kinematic recordings using The Motion Monitor software and MATLAB. Data integration and analyses of kinetic, kinematic, electromyography, and electroencephalography recordings using MATLAB.
  • 10% - Routine laboratory maintenance: Ongoing work in the lab requires a ready supply of electrodes, gels, tape, laundry, and various lab materials; assist in maintaining these supplies and general lab upkeep in order for a functional and efficient lab; train graduate and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) students in becoming proficient in technical skills for laboratory data collection and analysis.
  • 5% - Working collaboratively with research coordinator to facilitate participant scheduling and communications.

All required qualifications must be documented on application materials

Required Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree in Biomedical Engineering, experience in Motion Analysis and biomechanical data collection and analysis, proficiency in MATLAB, plus at least two years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant work experience to equal to at least six years.

Preferred Qualifications:
