Job Summary

The Associate Chief Nursing Executive (ACNE), Patient Care Services (PCS), serves as a key member of an outstanding leadership team at one of the most comprehensive and advanced academic healthcare systems in the country. They support and facilitate an inter-professional team and patient-centered approach to the delivery of care. This includes creating a nursing environment in which collaboration is valued and excellence in clinical care, education, and research is promoted and achieved. The Associate Chief Nursing Executive provides operational oversight of inpatient nursing services for the UC Davis Health departments by assisting the Chief Nursing and Patient Care Services Executive (CNE) in planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and evaluating hospital wide nursing/patient care services, including nursing practice standards and policies, staffing, strategic planning, organizational and staff development, maintaining necessary regulatory and compliance approvals and quality accreditations; provides highly responsible administrative support to the CNE; acts on behalf of the CNE in his/her absence. The Associate CNE has accountability for enhancing clinical practice environments; encouraging patient centered, unsurpassed clinical quality and patient safety while also providing significant contributions to education and research. They provide round-the-clock leadership and management in the areas of customer satisfaction, provision of safe and effective care, finance, human resources, communication, patient/staff advocacy, performance improvement and leadership and professional development.

ANCC Magnet Designation: The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Model provides a framework for clinical, operational, and leadership practice, serving as a roadmap for UC Davis Health Nursing's ongoing pursuit toward nursing excellence.

In total, this expansive role oversees eleven Unit Patient Care Services Directors, 560.56 FTEs, a budgeted revenue of $705,636,248, and operational budget of $ 162,816,847

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • A valid California Registered Nurse license.
  • Bachelor's or Master's of Science degree in Nursing.
  • Master's degree in nursing or related field.
  • Seven to ten years of current progressive leadership experience as a proven nurse leader in a complex acute care setting.
  • Academic medical center experience.
  • Strong experience developing and implementing operating plans and analyzing financial and quality data.
  • Experience in a highly complex unionized environment.
  • Successful experience employing quality, safety, and performance improvement initiatives that achieve superior clinical quality, favorable financial outcomes, and high patient and nurse satisfaction and engagement.
  • Demonstrated comfort in a fast paced, complex, matrixed academic environment.
  • Strong conceptual nursing base with expertise in professional practice models, systems thinking, and quality improvement processes.
  • Demonstrated record of effective nurse recruitment and retention strategies including ability to develop and retain new graduate nurses.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to the development and advancement of clinical leaders throughout the organization.
  • Demonstrated passion for the delivery of the highest level of service to patients and their families.
  • Proven ability of building internal and external relationships, with a demonstrated track record of working successfully with academic partners, physicians and physician leaders, and diverse management teams.
  • Ability to lead by modeling and influence with an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care.
  • Demonstrated high standards of behavior, performance, credibility, and integrity.
  • Demonstrated strong financial acumen and innovative approaches to engage staff in reducing waste and enhancing value for patients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the ANCC Magnet Recognition program.
  • Ability to embrace cultural diversity and inclusion as demonstrated by support for innovative recruitment and retention strategies focused on building a diverse clinical workforce.
  • Demonstrated strong executive presence and is political savvy, including communication skills that enable them to appreciate other's perspectives and offer compelling insights and recommendations.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification in field of practice preferred (if appropriate).
  • Doctorate in nursing.
  • 5-7 years of recent nurse manager experience leading an acute care nursing unit/department.
