This position is located on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.
Essential Functions
- Lead/Perform Operations & Maintenance on RTS instrumentation optics systems and high speed video cameras and CCTV networks.
- Lead the growth and development of optics user base by working with technical advisors, data analysts and current range users to identify new projects and mission customers.
- Lead/co-lead various disciplines in the completion of projects that may sometimes be technically complex.
- Lead/assist with improvements and modernization efforts.
- Work with data analysts to identify, refine and mitigate issues with data collection, calibration and analysis techniques.
- Provide input into operations schedules and performance metrics of the RTS optics systems.
- Lead/Perform optical tracking equipment analysis and track system problems to resolution.
- Perform periodic image quality checks and optical system performance follow up with data analysts.
- Develop schedule, plan and coordinate periodic recoats of instrumentation mirrors.
- Work with colleagues in other engineering disciplines to identify and remedy technical performance gaps on RTS optical systems.
- Ensure operational readiness of system(s) and teams ability to meet instrumentation requirements.
- Identify areas of process improvement and recommend efficiencies
- Prepare and deliver reports per schedules.
- Perform launch and other mission support, using Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
- Perform tracking operations; collect and maintain associated data within customer and procedural requirements
- Keep up to date on current optical data collection and calibration techniques and technologies.
- Perform other duties as assigned
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of operation, diagnosis, and repair of optical systems and sensors.
- Strong understanding of optical data analysis techniques and methodologies.
- Excellent personal computer and software application skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite)
- Excellent organizational skills, time management, administrative and prioritization skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting and program solving skills.
- Ability to write reports
- Ability to read and understand schematics, elevation, and assembly drawings and CAD drawings a plus.
- Ability to work well independently and also as an active team member in a medium-sized group
- Ability to be flexible, maintain a positive attitude, be reliable and work under pressure in a very dynamic environment
Required Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Experimental Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering or other engineering fields
- Ten or more years' experience in optics, electro-optics or research astronomy required.
- Experience with Infra-Red, High speed, CMOS, CCD and/or EMCCD scientific and engineering grade cameras required.
- Knowledge of refractive and diffractive optics, optical aberration and some experience with optical alignment required.
- Knowledge of visible and IR calibration techniques for metric and object signature data collection strongly desired.
- Experience with Zemax Optics studio, MatLab software packages strongly desired.
- Experience working with standard electronics test equipment such as oscilloscopes, video generators, wave-form generators, and analog/digital meters a plus.
Additional Eligibility Qualifications
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance, which requires U.S. Citizenship
- Must be able to relocate to the United States Army Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. passport
- Ability to work in remote locations (in pairs or small teams) for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in confined spaces for extended durations
- Ability lift, carry and maneuver 40 pound Optical components
- Able to travel by boat, helicopter, or aircraft to work at remote sites with limited facilities. Must have a waist circumference of 42" or less to ride in helicopters.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a USAG-KA driver's license.
- Flexibility to work non-duty hours and/or weekends, holidays, overtime, and shifted hours as required.
