Position Summary:

The Social Studies Education Program in collaboration with the Department of Teaching & Special Education at Central Michigan University invites applications for a fixed-term faculty position beginning in August 2025. This position is for a one-year fixed-term appointment, with a possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will teach 12 credits per semester, 6 in Social Studies and 6 in Teaching & Special Education. The successful candidate will:

  • Teach introductory social studies teaching methods for secondary social studies education majors and minors and more advanced courses as per expertise, experience, and credentials. Examples of courses include introduction to social studies, social studies pre-student teaching seminar, and economics for social studies educators.
  • Teach courses in the educator preparation program in the areas of exploring education and the teaching profession; reaching and teaching diverse learners; designing learning environments; developing effective teaching practices; analyzing teaching to improve student learning; and secondary methods.
  • Prepare classes, syllabi, and coursework; update courses for emerging technologies; provide instruction during class time; help students outside of class; provide feedback to students; provide student grades.
  • Engage in assessment of learning activities in assigned courses; help promote CMUs course offerings in both departments; and strengthen partnerships on and off campus.

Required Qualifications:
  • Masters degree in history, social studies education, or related field, with experience in secondary social studies education.
  • Three years of successful middle and/or high school social studies teaching experience.
  • Current or recent teaching certification.
  • Demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Eligible for membership in CMUs Educator Preparation Program.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to teach social studies specific pedagogy as well as secondary education pedagogy and assessment, and bridge the divide between the two programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in successful use of a variety of pedagogical approaches in social studies.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate courses.
  • Demonstrated experience teaching economics and/or personal finance as a secondary social studies educator is desirable.

About the Department:

The Social Studies Program at Central Michigan University is the largest secondary education major at the university, offering both a major and two minors to prepare future social studies teachers. The program is overseen by the Social Studies Interdisciplinary Council, which includes representatives from the core content areas of social studies and is led by the Director of Secondary Social Studies Education. The Department of Teaching & Special Education is the second-largest teacher preparation program in Michigan, graduating more than 300 students annually from 20 different academic areas.
