Adjunct Instructors - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

Overview:
The Center for Learning Innovation (CLI), an interdisciplinary department focused on health sciences at the University of Minnesota Rochester (UMR) , invites applications for Adjunct Faculty to teach courses in Summer 2025. Courses will run for 8 weeks, from June 9 through August 1. Courses are expected to be in-person; online may be considered depending on applicant experience and other factors. In-classroom hours during summer are typically 4-5 hours per week for a 3-credit lecture.
This is a term, non-tenured, Academic Professional and Administrative (P&A) position. Pay is based on a per course, per credit basis; the current rate is $1,675 per credit hour per course. Appointments are arranged semester by semester and employment is contingent upon the course meeting its enrollment target. There are no benefits associated with adjunct teaching positions.

Course Offerings:
Our current needs are for the following courses (course descriptions are linked to the course number):

  • HIST 1435 - Comparative Global History (3 credit hours)
  • HUM 1437 - History of Medicine in the West (3 credit hours)
  • MATH 1120 - Precalculus I (3 credit hours)
  • MATH 1121 - Precalculus II (3 credit hours)
  • MATH 1171 - Calculus I (4 credit hours)
  • PHIL 1441 - Introduction to Ethics (3 credit hours)
  • SOC 1570 - Social Problems (3 credit hours)
  • SOC 1571 - Introduction to Sociology (3 credit hours)

Responsibilities:
  • Attend class meetings and deliver course content.
  • Evaluate student performance and submit grading.
  • Respond to student inquiries and meet with students.
  • Hold at least 2 JustAsk (office) hours per week.
  • Opportunities for professional development related to instruction in UMR's active learning environment will be provided as part of the onboarding process.


Required Qualifications
  • A Master's degree in the discipline of the course (or closely related field with at least 18 hours of graduate coursework in the course discipline) is required to be hired as a Teaching Specialist
  • A PhD degree in the discipline of the course (or closely related field) is required to be hired as a Lecturer
  • Experience in undergraduate instruction

  • Experience with active learning pedagogy
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and/or professional practice and the proven ability to support the University's commitment to equity and diversity.
