What You Will Do

Do you have an interest in helping to protect the rich cultural heritage of northern New Mexico? Los Alamos National Laboratory, based in New Mexico, is seeking applicants for a full-time, permanent, staff archaeologist (Environmental Professional 2) in the Cultural Resources Program which is part of the Laboratory's diverse Environmental Protection and Compliance Division. You will be part of a large team of professional archaeologists that identify, document, update, and manage over 2,000 archaeological resources spanning 10,000 years of human activity across approximately 40 square miles-including some of the largest and most complex Ancestral Pueblo sites on the Pajarito Plateau. You will join a team of cultural resources specialists who support the Laboratory's mission by ensuring compliance with federal and state cultural resources laws and regulations including Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The position requires the ability to work cooperatively with team members to conduct cultural resources surveys, site recording, and monitoring, as well as review projects to assess potential impacts to cultural resources. Activities include contributing to report writing and other documents, and participating in outreach activities that promote cultural resources awareness internal and external to the Laboratory. You will also have the opportunity to participate in the development of long-term strategies for the management of cultural resources, and will be encouraged to collaborate with other archaeologists working in the region and in academia.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of and experience with federal and state legislation, regulations, and executive orders relevant to cultural resources management, including but not limited to the National Historic Preservation Act; Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act; and New Mexico Cultural Properties and Historic Standards for Survey, Inventory, and Monitoring.
  • Demonstrated excellence compiling fieldwork results into cultural resources technical reports or other documents, such as Laboratory of Anthropology forms, Section 106, and Section 110 reports.
  • Demonstrated excellence in interpersonal communication skills; teamwork; and the ability to work with various stakeholders, projects, personnel, and others across the institution.
  • Demonstrated consultation skills to partner with organizations to implement sound environmental practices.
Education/Experience:
Bachelor's degree and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the position.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field.
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience or equivalent specialized training in archeological research, administration, or management.
  • At least one year of full-time professional experience at a supervisory level in the study of archeological resources of the Ancestral Pueblo in the northern U.S Southwest.
  • At least four months of relevant supervised field and analytic experience in archaeology of the northern U.S. Southwest, especially with Ancestral Pueblo resources.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • Familiarity with archaeological field methods and procedures, data collection, data management technologies, statistical techniques, scientific methods, and/or data analysis.
  • Knowledge or experience working with indigenous peoples, especially in relation to cultural resource management issues.
  • Ability to act as Project Director for small- to medium-sized archaeological compliance projects.
  • Ability to act as Crew Chief on projects with other archaeologists, technicians, and/or students within the Cultural Resources Program.
  • Experience conducting field documentation and data collection that accurately identifies lithic raw materials, regional ceramic typologies, land-use and architectural features, and a familiarity with the general culture history the Northern Rio Grande region.
Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Lifting 20-30 pounds, Carrying 20-30 pounds, Standing, Walking, Climbing Stairs, Hiking on uneven terrain.

Work Environment: Outdoors, In a cold environment, In a hot environment 90-100 F, PPE: safety shoes or protective footgear.

Work Location : The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
