Cornell Health's Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) offers confidential counseling services, designed to help students with mental health concerns that may be affecting their quality of life and ability to learn. Our providers include psychologists, social workers, and mental health counselors from diverse cultural and clinical backgrounds. CAPS providers value students in all of their individuality, and are committed to welcoming all people with respect and sensitivity. Our providers regularly collaborate with Cornell Health's diverse array of healthcare providers as an integrated service that support both the mind and the body.
Urgent Care Counselors serve as members of a team with primary responsibility for the urgent mental health care needs of students at Cornell Health. These positions are a primary point of contact for students in immediate distress, collaborating routinely with partners across Cornell Health to provide assessment and support to students unable to wait for the next routine appointment. This includes responsibilities for students presenting in crisis, warm hand-off of students from other Cornell Health staff, coordinating hospitalizations with Cayuga Medical Center and other partners, consulting with Cornell Health colleagues about mental health concerns, and providing some routine administrative and clinical duties. Urgent Care Counselors serve as a resource for mental health concerns from the campus community, interface with campus crisis managers, and may make next-day follow-up calls for after-hours cases.
While this position requires in-person work, there may be occasional flexibility for remote work. There are no after-hours on-call responsibilities associated with this position.

Please Note: We are looking for two (2) full-time, on-campus 12-month fixed-term positions. There is no visa sponsorship for this position. The review of applications will begin on January 12, 2025. Applications submitted after this date may still be considered until the position is filled.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Mental Health Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, Creative Arts Therapy or PhD/PsyD in Clinical/Counseling Psychology.
- Licensed or license-eligible in NYS as a Mental Health Counselor, Clinical Social Worker, Marriage and Family Therapist, Creative Arts Therapist or Psychologist. Uniquely qualified candidates without licensure, but en route to licensure, will be considered. Must obtain NYS license or have licensure in process within one year of initial hire date.
- Three years clinical experience in a diverse clinical setting or one year in a crisis management clinical setting.
- Documented competence in working with computers/technology, word processing, database, email, record keeping and electronic calendaring software.
- Expertise in common clinical issues prevalent in college mental health including but not limited to suicidality, disordered eating, substance use, and trauma.
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in an integrated ambulatory health care environment.
- Proficiency in providing mental health treatment in other languages in addition to English.
- Experience in college health or working with college-aged individuals.
