Patient Mobility Technician

Patient Mobility Technicians mobilize patients to minimize the factors that contribute to a decline in patient mobility and functionality during their hospital stay. These include mobility/functional issues, sleep deprivation, delirium, altered nutritional states, prolonged hospitalizations, and post-hospital rehabilitation stays. Must be familiar with standard precautions and isolation procedures. Must be skilled in best practices related to proper body mechanics, testing for minimal assistance, safe patient handling and safe practice and procedures.

The purpose of this position is to introduce an evidence-based mobility program designed to maintain baseline mobility and functional capacity, decrease incidence of delirium, and help decrease length of stay in hospitalized patients.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR Certification or UC Davis Health CPR within 3 months of hire.
  • Incumbent must complete Crisis Intervention Training within 3 months of hire and is required to complete training on an annual basis.
  • The following UC provided training and testing will be provided upon hire:
  1. Required University-provided training and testing (i.e. lift equipment/assistive devices, proper body mechanics, etc.)
  2. Required University-provided training and testing Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training
  3. Required University-provided training and testing Maintaining the Dignity of Morbid Obesity in the Hospital Setting.
  • No minimum education required.
  • 1 year customer service experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience safely operating safe patient handling equipment including lifts, friction reducing devices, powered and nonpowered patient equipment.
  • Must have knowledge of basic body mechanics and safe patient lift/transfer techniques.
  • Must have good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Responsibly ensure the safety of our patients and staff by adhering to and enforcing the Safe Patient Handling (SPH) policy and using SPH techniques and equipment.
  • Serve as a resource in the use of SPH equipment and movement of patients.
  • Serve as body mechanics and SPH coaches and trainers for staff involved in patient handling.
  • Strong knowledge of patient care support activities, systems, external regulations. and internal policies.
  • Demonstrated analytical experience with the ability to identify, analyze, report and resolve problems accurately and timely.
  • Knowledge and ability to exercise discretion, use good judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Skills establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
  • Ability to maintain composure, respond calmly, and use sound Judgment during medical emergencies.
  • Knowledge of safely operating wheelchairs, gurneys, electric beds, cribs, and special beds.
  • Knowledge of proper body mechanics and patient transfer techniques and skill to transfer patients without injury to self, patient or others.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow appropriate Infection control techniques to safeguard other patients and visitors from infected patients.
  • Knowledge of and skills to perform CPR.
  • Knowledge of 02, IVs/pumps, feeding tubes/pumps, foley bags, and chest tubes.
  • Knowledge in recognizing and reporting problems with life support equipment or a sudden change in a patient's condition.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend the English language.
  • Ability to maintain a culture that values diversity, respect and accepts the contribution of others, and supports open communication.
  • Judgment skills to make independent clinical decisions.
  • Skills to work accurately and quickly under pressure.
  • Knowledge of legal implications for clinical practice.
  • Ability to appropriately use available resources (personnel and equipment/supplies) to ensure that the patients on a specific unit receive safe, appropriate patient care during the course of a shift.
  • Ability to appropriately share and exchange information.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Safe Patient Handling and Mobility (SPHM) Certification
  • Prior experience in-patient care setting; assisting in safe patient handling, mobility, and emergency code blue situations is highly recommended.
  • Knowledge of Fair Labor Practices, Collective Bargaining Agreements, and University policies and procedures.

    Work Environment

    UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
