Salary: The salary range of employees currently holding equivalent positions is $43,888/year to $60,000/year. Position Summary
The laboratory of Dr. Justin Richner at the University of Illinois, Chicago Department of Microbiology and Immunology seeks a Visiting Research Specialist who will focus on research and scientific techniques within the fields of molecular virology, viral immunology, and mRNA vaccine development. The position will conduct research, develop experimental protocols, and devise methods to apply scientific principles and theories in research projects.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Design experiments related to viral immunology research using tissue cultured cells
  • Maintain mouse colonies, including performing genotyping assays, sexing, and weaning pups
  • Perform molecular and cellular experiments to understand molecular and genetic mechanisms using cell culture, molecular biology, and cell-based assays; especially qRT-PCR and focus forming assays.
  • Engage in laboratory research, analyze data and information, evaluate and report findings to senior research faculty and research staff
  • Oversee and mentor undergraduate students working/volunteering in the lab; participate in the oversight of laboratory activities
  • Oversee adherence to safety protocols under BSL1, BSL2, and BSL3 guidance.
  • Summarize and present findings to the scientific community
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or related field required. Master's degree in science preferred.
    • A minimum of 3 years related research experience.
    • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
    • Proficient in specific lab research techniques.


    Preferred Qualifications
    • Applicants with experience in lab specific techniques will be preferred. This includes PCR mutagensis, molecular cloning, agarose gel electophoresis, transfections, western blots and, and Sanger sequencing.
    • Experience working with mice is preferred.
