The Solar Tech is primarily responsible for providing support to multiple RRE Solar / Battery Storage sites in North Carolina on a continual/on-demand basis and to establish O&M support for new site(s) start-up as well as long term operation and maintenance. The Solar Tech III level will also be responsible for training new Solar Tech I's and II's. It is important to note that each site is unique adding to the complexity of the position. Below are the Essential Functions & Responsibilities of this position including but not limited to:
- Perform daily operational rounds and operations activities up to and including developing and implementing complex LOTOs. This includes being competent to train to become LOTO desk qualified
- Perform inverter / array maintenance tasks.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks.
- Perform all Lock-Out-Tag-Out tasks needed for maintenance activities including research, development, isolation, independent verification, zero energy verification and work leader duties. Perform contractor oversight duties.
- Communicate with Operations Center regarding daily plant / equipment status and maintenance. Daily travel could include multiple site visits.
- Perform rotational On-Call duties. Perform record keeping duties concerning Environmental, Health & Safety records, spread sheets and documents.
- Ability to read and understand technical OEM manuals, recommendations, and warranty agreements
- Perform startup duties necessary to commission new sites which will include but not limited to, punch list, developing procedures and PM's, system walk downs, assisting startup personnel with commissioning activities, starting/stopping units from multiple branded Control Systems.
- Must have strong instrumentation, electrical / electronic controls knowledge to troubleshoot, maintain and operate a photovoltaic solar plant
- Take the roll as integration lead for new sites to ensure RR&Es standards are meet prior to turn over from Duke's construction group. This requires the ability to coordinate, time management, and thorough record keeping
- New hires must be able to become proficient in the aforementioned required skills to be able to trouble shoot the varying technologies
- Ability to read and understand technical electrical, civil, and mechanical drawings General knowledge of high voltage equipment and ability to perform high voltage switching
- Prepare service reports for site visits, emergency repairs, equipment modifications and equipment improvement investigations
- Ensure a safe, event free work environment by ensuring strict adherence to company protocols
- Enforce procedures and processes in accordance with site specific O&M Standards and guidelines
- Develop and review site specific procedures.
- Understand and enforce BES site requirements.
- This position requires more than 50% domestic regional travel
- This position contains a weight restriction of 275 pounds as an essential function of the job. The purpose of this restriction is to ensure that all weight rated equipment is used in an appropriate and safe manner within maximum allowed weight loading.
- Must live within approximate 30 mile radius of assigned site.
- Capable of passing background check for NERC CIP
- Must successfully complete EEI's Plant Operator Selection System (POSS), and Power Plant Maintenance Selection System (MASS)
- Must successfully complete a Power Plant Physical Abilities Assessment
- Required to pass physical
- Valid driver's license
- Capable of passing background check for NERC CIP
- Strong Background in Electrical and Electronic Equipment Troubleshooting and repair.
- Proven ability to train and develop associates (Solar Tech III only)
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively direct owner and contract company associates
- Must possess good oral and written communication skills
- Must be able to demonstrate problem solving ability
- Must be motivated to work independently
- Must have strong organization skills
- Must have experience using electrical test and measurement equipment
- Ability to troubleshoot from schematics
- Solid working knowledge of various measurement techniques desired
Basic/Required Qualifications
- Associates or Technical Degree
- In Lieu of Associates or Technical Degree, HS Diploma/GED and 3 years of related experience
- Experience with inverter controls / maintenance and photovoltaic system functionality
- Experience with PLC Controls / Computer Networking
- Working knowledge of Power Distribution systems
- Electrical Design experience
- Maximo CMMS experience
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Power Point)
- Knowledge of general safety and environmental practices
Working Conditions
- Generally, a 4-10's schedule, with rotating on call/call out requirements
- Occasional overtime, including weekend work and holidays.
- Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF)
- Routine exposure to an outdoor work environment
- Be able or work alone, as well as, in a team environment
- Will sit and stand for long periods of time during the day.
- Will walk, climb stairs and on equipment.
- May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist
- May lift up to 50 lbs.
- Required to use hands to finger, lift, handle, carry or feel objects.
- May stoop, kneel, bend, talk and hear.
- Specific vision abilities are required.
- Ability to work in high temperatures (85+ Degrees Fahrenheit) with arc flash clothing that is typically thick and can increase heat exposure.
- Daily travel to multiples sites may be required.
