Boiler Operator Position Number: 904104 Full Time or Part Time: Full Time Anticipated Recruitment Range: Position Type: Job Category: Staff - Technical/Trade Organizational Unit Overview: Facilities Services is a unit in Campus Operations Division, which is a part of a broad division of Administration and Finance that includes all aspects of facilities management at East Carolina University. East Carolina University is the third largest university in the University of North Carolina system with approximately 28,000 FTS and a staff of over 6,000. The university is comprised of more than 7 million square feet of facilities located on approximately 1400 acres with physical assets in excess of $1.5 billion. This includes the Main, Health Sciences, and West Research Campuses, and satellite locations throughout North Carolina associated with university programs. Facilities Services has an annual budget in excess of $30 million and employs approximately 500 FTE. Major functions include facilities maintenance and housekeeping services. Facilities Services' primary purpose is to plan and perform corrective and preventive maintenance functions on all building structures and equipment and utility infrastructure. Corrective maintenance returns equipment to optimal design performance after failure or upon degradation from age, adverse operation conditions, etc. Preventive maintenance minimizes equipment failures and reduces corrective maintenance. Job Duties: The primary duty of this position is to operate the steam boilers and associated equipment in the Steam Plant for the Main Campus to maintain sufficient steam pressure for campus space heating, domestic water heating, and various process uses by campus dining and science facilities. Duties include but are not limited to performing preventive and corrective maintenance on steam plant and steam plant distribution equipment, maintaining boiler logs, and preparing boilers for annual inspection. Performs water tests, adjusts chemical feed rate, performs blow downs, and maintains logs for chemical treatment purposes. Responds to boiler/boiler system alarms and takes corrective action as appropriate. This may include adjusting valves, circulating pumps and controls, and air/fuel regulation for the boilers. Monitors fuel tank levels and receives gasoline and diesel fuel deliveries. Monitors fuel storage tanks and tank monitoring systems. Assists in record keeping for fuel reports. Performs daily housekeeping as assigned within the Steam Plant. Operates ECU maintenance vehicles. Ability to work any shift assigned including weekends and holidays. Minimum Education/Experience: High school diploma or equivalency and one year of related experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Requires certification(s). License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation: Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Experience in steam boiler/steam plant operation is preferred.
