Overview
Princeton University's Office of Population Research (OPR) at the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA) is looking to hire two full-time pre-doctoral research assistants (Senior Research Specialists). The positions entail close collaboration with professor Florencia Torche on research projects related to stratification and mobility, human capital formation, and educational opportunity. The position involves a variety of tasks that provide excellent preparation for graduate school, such as conducting social sciences research using econometric tools, managing complex datasets, summarizing research findings, and editing research papers. The opportunity to actively participate in fieldwork in Latin America is also a possibility for the position. In addition to working closely with faculty, senior research specialists participate in the vibrant academic life of Princeton University, including taking graduate or undergraduate courses, attending seminars hosted by the Office of Population Research (OPR), the Department of Sociology, and the School of Public and International Affairs (SPIA), and engaging with graduate students and other research assistants. The position is ideal for someone with a Master's Degree in the social sciences or a recent college graduate with a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D.
This is a one-year term limited position, with possibility of extension conditional on funding.
Responsibilities
Data management and statistical analysis: This position requires high analytical, statistical, and problem solving skills. The position entails implementation of statistical analysis including multiple regression models, logistic regression, and causal inference approaches such as difference-in-difference and fixed effects using statistical software such as R, Stata, or similar. This requires high level of understanding of econometric models and the application of these models to address substantive questions. The position also requires the ability to understand, clean, and code complex datasets.
Paper drafting and literature review: This position will give assistance to Princeton University Professors working on highly technical research papers, and the successful applicant is expected to help formulate relevant sociological questions; collect, perform literature reviews of the most recent research in several sociological fields, and extract and summarize relevant findings.
Dataset curation and management: This position requires maintaining large datasets from administrative sources such as educational and health agencies and interacting with relevant partners outside of academia to evaluate data quality and consistency.
Qualifications
Essential Qualifications:
- BA/BS degree in Sociology, Economics, Population Sciences, Political Sciences, Statistics, or related discipline.
- Excellent research, writing, and programming skills. Knowledge of Stata or R is essential.
Preferred Qualifications:
- This position is ideal for candidates with at least a bachelor's degree with a strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or research career after acquiring one or two years of research experience.
- Master's degree preferred.
- Working knowledge of Spanish desirable, but not essential.
