Summary

This is the entry level of the Engineering classification Employees at this entry level solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. They have knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

This position will support the New Megawatts initiative within the Nuclear Generation Department including the power uprate projects at Catawba, McGuire, and Brunswick. This position will offer an opportunity to develop a diverse understanding of power plant specific systems, layouts, and design basis while working on multi-year projects supporting exciting new nuclear generation projects. This may include plant walkdowns, vendor interfaces, development of program/project documents, assistance with funding packages, schedule development, and other needs consistent with large projects.

The position should be located at a Charlotte area Duke Energy nuclear facility or corporate office. This position will report to an engineering manager in the Nuclear Generation Department. This position allows a hybrid work posture with work split between in the office and remote. The position is a normal office working environment that will involve onsite plant visits based on project needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of routine problems in area of expertise.
  • Assists in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities under the guidance of higher-level employees.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches associated with the resolution of routine technical problems.
  • Conducts basic engineering studies requiring little evaluation or ingenuity.
  • Possesses knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic / Required Qualifications - Nuclear Engineer I
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 0-2 years of engineering experience

Basic / Required Qualifications - Nuclear Engineer II
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering
  • 2-4 years of engineering experience

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • Completed Fundamentals of Engineering examination.
  • Experience at a nuclear power facility or power generation facility.
  • Experience with day-to-day nuclear site schedules and operations.
  • Experience with oversight and interface with vendors and contractors.

Job-Specific knowledge, skills, or abilities
  • Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.

Specific Requirements
  • Minimum of 1 year of nuclear experience
  • In lieu of 1 year of nuclear experience, a selected candidate is subject to the oversight and written approval authority of a designated qualified individual until the selected candidate becomes fully qualified.
  • Able to achieve nuclear site Unescorted Access.
  • Willingness to work extended hours with changes in work schedule whenever necessary which at times could include call outs to support stations in an emergent condition.
  • This position may be required to have Emergency Response Organization (ERO) responsibilities which could include callouts with a defined response time to the site and an on-call duty rotation requiring the employee to be Fit for Duty.
  • Required to wear personal protective equipment (hardhat, safety glasses, fall protection, etc.) as needed.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

Working Conditions
  • Typically, an office environment with some work in the plant to conduct system walkdowns and field support of modification implementation.
