This is the fourth level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification and considered the career level for the job hierarchy. Senior Engineering Technologist provide technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently with increased latitude for unreviewed work. The Sr. Engineering Technologist position will support Dan River CC as the DCS & Electrical System owner.
Responsibilities - Sr Engineering Technologist Electrical/DCS
- Responsible for maintaining the configuration of station and turbine-specific Distributed Control System (DCS), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), and programmable logic controllers (PLC) process control systems to ensure safe, reliable, and regulatory compliant operation of power stations
- Responsible for maintaining station electrical configurations
- Responsible for system architecture, design, specification, selection, and services related to site and/or regional process control systems
- Have sufficient knowledge of the functions and limitations of the specific station systems and equipment being controlled to enable confident troubleshooting and manipulation of the control system without incurring safety, reliability, or regulatory impacts
- Perform point and logic configuration changes as well as graphics modifications and limited control loop tuning
- Log both temporary and permanent configuration changes made to control systems
- Monitor control system periodically for unlogged temporary modifications or forced points and resolve with internal customers
- Diagnose control system problems and alarms and provide resolution, including system hardware, software, logic, human-machine interface (HMI) and related procedures
- Manage any external control system vendor support as a single point of contact (SPOC)
- Support startups, runbacks, and trips as required to troubleshoot malfunctions outside the capability of operations & maintenance
- Support post-maintenance testing as required
- Scrub and manipulate alarms utilizing both internal and external alarm management philosophy guidelines and site preferences to minimize nuisance alarms and periodically clean up alarm page backlog
- Interface with operations & maintenance, assisting with any other control system challenges and needs
- Provide capital project support for necessary process control system modifications, including:
- Development of control philosophy and functional descriptions
- Factory and Site Acceptance Testing
- Checkout, Commissioning, and Startup
- Performance/Demonstration Testing
- Be versed in CIP-cyber security standards and how they affect site control system security, providing expertise for all standard datalink communication and network protocols, including Modbus serial, Modbus ethernet, OPC and other various protocols
- Coordinate with cyber security specialists for scheduling and implementing necessary patching as well as database management
- Manage the control system vendor contracts, including on-call support, maintenance, and parts agreements
- Manage control system hardware life cycle, including: obsolescence, spares, performance upgrades, replacements, vendor recommendations, alternative vendors, equivalency evaluations, etc
- Maintain awareness and proficiency on controls platforms (hardware & software) and provide ad hoc training on control systems to Engineers and Technicians
- Maintain plant risk grid for system/equipment responsibilities
Basic/Required Qualifications - Sr Engineering Technologist
- Associates in Engineering Technology and a minimum of 8 years related experience
- In Lieu of degree, High School/GED and 12 years of related experience

- Powerplan, Maximo, PasTa software
Specific Requirements
- Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
- Good written and oral communication skills.
- Either 3+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 5+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 9+ years equivalent experience without a degree.
