The School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) at Tufts University is seeking one (1) Post-Graduate Teaching Fellow (PGTF) for Spring 2025. PGTFs teach classes individually or with full-time faculty, according to curricular needs. All candidates should have received their MFA from SMFA in May 2024.The successful candidate will teach GRA 183, Artists? Books Today . The PGTF will work closely with a faculty mentor and will be required to attend departmental meetings, training sessions, and the new faculty orientation with the department (date TBD). Research and service are not part of this position. The PGTF will also be assisting with events within the Graduate Programs such as Open Studios and the Visiting Artist Lecture Series. Course Description : Mixed media class explores handmade artists? books as visual poetry, narrative, document, conceptual space, memoir and museum. Binding and image-making demonstrations, workshops and assigned problems expand students? awareness of artists? books as contemporary vehicles for content and hands-on innovation. Explores the history/culture of artists? books (ancient codex, medieval illuminated manuscripts, chap books, altered books); draws upon global traditions (Asian, Middle Eastern, Western). Hands-on technical instruction, presentations, visiting artists, readings and critiques. Previous bookmaking experience is not necessary but encouraged. Non-SMFA students and MAT Art Education students will receive a letter grade. Demonstrated skill in graphic arts, attention to detail, strong and prompt communication skills, familiar with Canva. The ideal candidate will have a strong practice in book arts and the graphic arts with skills in printing, graphic design and bookbinding. We are seeking a PGTF who is knowledgeable of the history of artist?s books and contemporary trends in the field. The Graphic Arts area offers courses that focus on the development of a personal and public voice through a broad range of approaches utilizing design, writing, printing, typography, graphic images, pictograms, comics, sequential art and interactive web art.
