This is the intermediate level of the EHS Consulting classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in environmental, health, and / or safety areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. (NOTE: This position may serve as the entry level for individuals who have acquired a college degree with comparable experience external to the company, or for individuals who have acquired a Masters Degree in in an EHS field.)
This position will be supporting a regional territory for the Natural Gas Business Unit. Supports basic work activities to comply with health or safety laws, regulations and corporate requirements. Maintains knowledge of Business Unit and Enterprise EHS programs and policies that applies to facility and field work activities. Monitors and prevents EHS incidents and hazards along with investigation of incidents, accidents, injuries or complaints. Knowledge of applicable OSHA regulations and able to provide advice. Assists investigations of EHS/pipeline safety incidents. Periodically assists with employee training, emergency preparedness and quality assurance programs. Provides HS coverage of emergency outages including coverage for peers during and outside of normal work hours. Develops positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees and management to effectively complete work activities.
Responsibilities
- Continues to develop and increase knowledge of the organization, procedures and assigned customers. Analyzes and understands intermediate - level information, past practices and business objectives to make appropriate recommendations to management/assigned customers.
- Monitors the practices of assigned organizational EHS area, to facilitate compliance with company and/or regulatory policies and requirements in which to mitigate risks. Examples include providing intermediate - leveled regulatory required and internal safety or environmental reports, assigned safety or environmental training programs, development and maintenance of procedure and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental and safety laws, and to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance and helping track regulatory changes, legislative activities, and industry standards.
- Starts researching, developing, and/or evaluating intermediate-level programs, policies, or activities within the discipline they are assigned which have small impact or level of complexity. Solves a range of medical problems and develops solutions using standard-moderate procedures.
- Assists with providing information/consultation to management/assigned customers on existing EHS programs and policies. Examples include serving as an intermediate expert for advanced technical programs and compliance issues and supports company's environmental or safety goals, strategies, programs and processes. With assistance from a Senior or above, the incumbent develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental or safety laws and regulations.
- Helps advanced teammates ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Assists with tracking basic regulatory changes, basic legislative activities and basic industry standards and helps advanced teammates assist with identifying needed changes to facility's compliance programs. With appropriate leadership guidance, they may assist with working with federal, state, and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams.

Required/Basic Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Science, Health and Safety, Engineering or Other Related Degree
- In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 7 years related work experience
Desired Qualifications
- Masters degree in Science, Health and Safety, Business, Engineering or Other related Degree.
- In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience
- Certified Safety Professional
- Construction Safety and Health Certification
- Associate Safety Professional
- Occupational Hygiene and Safety Technician
- Construction Health and Safety Technician
- Graduate Safety Practitioner
Additional Preferred Qualifications
- Actively working towards a professional accreditation related to EHS
- Self-starter related to on the job learning and job-related assignments
- Effective communication (both oral and written) and interpersonal skills with a customer-oriented focus.
- Maintain and balance support for multiple departments.
- Professional interaction during field observations and business unit meetings.
- Experience with interacting and partnering with represented work groups.
- Perform IH basic sampling as needed (i.e. noise, light, etc.).
- Support regional event free initiative and teams.
Working Conditions

- Some overnight travel may be required
- Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard
- Outside work during all seasons.
- Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.
- Field, work site, facility visitation required.
