The University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) College of Nursing invites exceptional and promising nurse leaders to apply for part-time and full-time Clinical Instructor positions in the Department of Biobehavioral Nursing Science. Faculty are dedicated to advancing biological, behavioral and clinical science for adults with complex health disorders, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and more. Department faculty are leaders in professional organizations and serve on national research and professional boards, such as the Scientific Review Sections for the National Institutes of Health, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and the Board of Scientific Advisors of the National Cancer Institute.

Salary is based on a 9-month academic appointment paid over 12 months, commensurate with qualifications, experience, and internal equity.

Duties & Responsibilities

Teaching: Clinical instructors participate in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels. Undergraduate and graduate teaching consists of traditional classroom lectures, seminars, distance learning and small groups for clinical instruction.

  • Participation in scholarly teaching/learning activities (e.g., developing evidence-based learning objects/tools)
  • Clinical supervision or guidance of students, acting as a role model or clinical preceptor

Scholarship/Research: Nursing scholarship and research span broad content areas, diverse research designs and methodological strategies, including those associated with the biological and social sciences, as well as the humanities.
  • Evidence of scholarly activities (e.g., presentations, publications, guideline development)
  • Practice related publications
  • Support and participation in research activities

Practice/Service: Clinical instructors may contribute to the service mission of the university commensurate with their percent of time allocated to the College. Service activities are conducted in a culturally safe and appropriate manner that demonstrate value for the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice. Participation may include service at local, regional, national, and international level.
  • Membership in professional organizations
  • Participates in clinical practice committees
  • Clinical practice in area of specialization or expertise (e.g. clinical specialist, manager, nurse practitioner in a healthcare agency


Minimum Qualifications: A minimum of a master's degree in Nursing (MSN) at the time of appointment. Additionally,
  • Family Nurse Practitioner faculty qualifications are national certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner and eligibility for licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner faculty qualifications are national certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner and eligibility for licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse in the State of Illinois.
  • All other programs require a State of Illinois Registered Nurse License by time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, or PhD in nursing or related sciences at the time of appointment.
