"Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in Training" at a flat rate of $40,343 per year regardless of education or experience level unless you have previous experience as a Telecommunicator with NC State Highway Patrol only.

This position serves as a Telecommunicator in Training for the NC State Highway Patrol. The work location is Troop CX Communications in Raleigh, NC (Wake County).

Job duties include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Receiving emergency and non-emergency requests for service from the following sources: general public, allied public-safety agencies, Highway Patrol and other local, state, and federal law enforcement staff.
  • Receiving requests via telephone, radio, and computer communications networks.
  • Recording and assigning these requests according to established directives, policies, and guidelines according to priority.
  • Operating multi-channel radio workstations, telephone and various computer systems in fulfilling these responsibilities.
  • Dispatching Emergency Medical Services with other emergency equipment when necessary.
  • Speaking clearly and distinctly.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits . This position requires working rotating shifts which include evenings and overnights for extended periods of time. This may occur for several days without a day off.

Applicants without recent NC State Highway Patrol Telecommunicator experience:
If the selected candidate has not worked as an NC State Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in the previous 3 years (36 months), they will be hired as a "Highway Patrol Telecommunicator in Training" at a flat rate of $40,343 per year regardless of education or experience level.

Once hired, the new employee must complete a 640-hour Basic Training Program and required training courses, attain NC Sheriff's Standard Certification, complete one year of on-the-job training and receive a performance evaluation of "Meets Expectations" or higher. Upon completion of these requirements, the employee will advance to the full responsibilities of a Highway Patrol Telecommunicator and receive a $2,272 increase to a salary of $42,615.

The NC State Highway Patrol's primary mission is to reduce collisions and make the highways of North Carolina as safe as possible. The NC State Highway Patrol has more than 1,600 troopers who cover nearly 80,000 miles of North Carolina roadways, more than any other state except Texas. In addition to enforcing the state's traffic laws, state troopers also guide traffic during hurricane evacuations, re-route traffic around hazardous chemical spills, and they stand ready should any act of terrorism occur. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:
  • Experience in typing and/or data entry.

MANAGEMENT PREFERENCES :
  • Experience using radio equipment in an emergency response setting (such as po lice, fire, EMS, military) or in an emergency communications center.
  • Experience receiving and transmitting communication messages of a critical nature.
  • Experience in reading paper maps and/or using mapping programs (e.g. Google/Bing).

NOTE : Qualified recommended applicants must undergo and pass a Criminal Background Investigation, Drug Screening Test and Psychological Evaluation. The selected a pplicant must successfully complete Basic Telecommunicator Training School and be eligible to obtain and maintain DCI certification (i.e. they must not have prior or pending convictions of felonies and/or misdemeanors that occurred within the last four years).

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and demonstrated ability to type and work efficiently under pressure; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Necessary Special Qualifications : Must meet the applicable education, employment, and training standards as required to be Department of Criminal Information (DCI) certified; must be DCI certified or become certified within 120 days of employment.
