Process Control and Automation Engineer
$ 117,000-$195,000
The above range represents the expected base salary for this position. The actual salary may vary based upon several factors including, but not limited to relevant skills and experience, credentials for the position, time in an applicable role, and geographic location.
The opportunity:
Supports both PLC and DCS control systems throughout the mill. This position is responsible for designing and implementing controls, maintaining and troubleshooting control systems, and finding and implementing control improvements. In order to best support the mill's operations and capital projects, this position acts as the primary process control representative to all Production areas (Utilities, Paper Mill). As the mill upgrades obsolete control systems, this position will share responsibility for working with outside engineering resources to research and answer technical issues ensuring successful, on-schedule migrations with event-free startups. This role works with the operations and maintenance team to quickly address performance gaps to ensure the mill meets production targets and customer demands. This role reports to the Maintenance Manager. This role also assists on projects within the engineering team and with external engineering support / consultants. The controls engineers also stays current with technology and vendors.
How you will impact WestRock:
- Provide primary Process Control support to assigned production areas within the mill; work closely with process area owners to determine and meet process control needs.
- Work with departments and other engineers to develop alternatives and estimates for proposed capital and major maintenance projects.
- Provide Project Management and Process Control engineering in the development and execution of maintenance and some capital projects.
- Support of the Maintenance team in troubleshooting problems with the processes and the process control systems.
- Assist in training and knowledge sharing with operators and E/I mechanics on process control systems to help improve their operating and troubleshooting effectiveness.
- Share in the responsibility of providing weekend and off-hour support for mill needs
- Plan, configure, test, implement, and maintain process control system upgrades and modifications
What you need to succeed:
- Process Knowledge of Pulp and Paper Manufacturing or other continous manufacturing processes.
- BS Degree in Engineering, preferably Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or Chemical Engineering with a focus in controls.
- Strong computer skills including data analysis.
- Experience with control loop tuning, performance evaluation tools and process data historians (e.g. OSI PI, Control Performance Monitor).
- Experience with instrumentation and electrical systems associated with Process Control Systems.
- Knowledge of other electrical infrastructure including drives and switchgear.
- Experience in Ethernet Networking and Industrial Communication Protocols.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels of an organization.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Ability to manage capital projects from concept to installation, start-up and commissioning support.
- Experience working with Siemens control systems. This includes S5/S7 hardware and software, and PC7 DCS platforms.
- Experience with three phase motors, motor controls, variable speed drives, and electrical distribution systems.
- Experience with Foxboro IA DCS systems a plus.
- Exposure to capital project control system upgrades.
- Proficiency with paper mill instrumentation.
- Demonstrated understanding of electrical safe work practices
- Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical ability
- Ability to excel in a cross functional team environment
- Well organized record keeping and document control.
- Experience optimizing and improving processes and systems.
- Work with our Management of Change process
- Ability to travel for training, projects or support organizational needs.

The salary range for this position is $117,000.00 - $195,000.00, depending on your role, level, and location. The benefits for this role may include short-term bonus incentive, health insurance, flexible spending accounts, health savings accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and a number of programs that provide for both paid and unpaid time away from work. Your actual pay will be based on your work location and other factors, such as your skills, experience, and education.
