Job Summary and Qualifications
Under the general supervision of the Manager of Central Sterile Processing, the Supervisor of Central Sterile Processing is responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the daily activities of the Central Sterile Processing Department to provide for processing instrument trays and other supplies necessary for surgical procedures.
What you will do in this role:
- Provides direction and supervision to technicians assigned to the Sterile Central Processing Department to set up and maintain instrument trays and equipment on a continuous basis to ensure ready availability.
- Applies specialized knowledge of specialized instruments, equipment, and supplies utilized in the provision of surgical services to provide direction to the staff assigned to the Department.
- Organizes instruments, equipment, and supplies for easy access and maximum efficiency with supervision of staff in accomplishing this responsibility.
- Organizes time efficiently to meet position responsibilities in collaboration with the Director, Surgical Services and Registered Nurses.
- Maintains a positive work atmosphere for staff as evidenced by staff interviews and department Gallup Scores.
- Applies basic knowledge of infection control principles in the cleaning, disinfecting, and stocking of all sterile equipment and supplies and in supervising personnel in this process.
- Maintains current knowledge of specialized equipment and supplies utilized in the provision of surgical services.
- Applies comprehensive knowledge of specialized equipment required to provide safe sterilization of prepared instrument trays and supplies.
- Ensures that all sterilized items have required sterilization monitors to validate sterilization.
- Maintains accurate records of all sterilization procedures with immediate notification of the Director, Surgical Services of equipment problems or any potential of lack of adequate sterilization of items.
- Ensures that preventive maintenance and all quality controls are provided for disinfecting and sterilizing equipment.
- Ensures adequate amounts of equipment and supplies in collaboration with the Director, Surgical Services with re-ordering and re-stocking as indicated.
- Utilizes all cleaning products according to guidelines and MSDS to provide for appropriate cleaning and disinfection of equipment while preventing exposure to chemicals.
- Under guidance of the Registered Nurse or Director, Surgical Services, determines appropriate priorities for activities of self and others based on work demand.
- Utilizes communication skills effectively in working with personnel.
- Maintains current knowledge of individual specifications for special instrument trays to ensure ready availability.
- Maintains awareness of own limitations and seeks guidance from appropriate personnel.
- Ensures that problems or concerns regarding activities are communicated with the Director or Assistant Director of Surgical Services.
- Provides assistance to other personnel in Department when available to include assistance in maintaining Operating Room equipment and supplies.
- Previous sterile processing or experience in Operating Room environment desired. Flexibility in scheduling to meet the needs of the departments served. Knowledge of sterilization procedures.
