Department Summary

In partnership with and in support of administrative stakeholders, the Business Information Technology team designs, develops, configures, enhances, optimizes, and maintains products and platforms that enable UCLA's business functions (e.g., Budget & Financial Management, Student Information, Faculty Information, Business Information, Human Resource Information, Customer Relationship Management).The Legacy Financial Management team conceives, configures, monitors, defines, tests, delivers, monitors, optimizes, and refines human resources products and application technologies, including but not limited to mobile and web applications, collaboration tools, CRM products, budget/financial management products, HR applications, and other services. This department also works to optimize user experience, address digital accessibility needs, and establish the highest standards of quality assurance and release management for UCLA's administrative applications and technologies.

Position Summary

The Senior Mainframe Developer, Financial Management IT Products will lead the development, maintenance, and enhancement of highly complex applications. This experienced professional will take the lead in designing and implementing complex solutions. The Senior Mainframe Developer, Financial Management IT Products will work closely with business analysts, system architects, and other stakeholders to design, code, and test core applications and systems within the Financial Management IT Products group. Furthermore, this position will be responsible for conducting in-depth analyses of existing core systems and applications, identifying opportunities for improvement, and implementing optimizations to enhance system performance and reliability. They will also provide mentorship to junior developers.

The Senior Mainframe Developer, Financial Management IT Products will positively impact UCLA's operations and culture by enabling University stakeholders to effectively leverage financial management products and applications. This team member will advance the University's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across faculty, staff, and students. This role will execute UCLA's vision while modeling UCLA's culture and values.

Salary & Compensation

*UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Salary offers at the top of the range are not common. Qualifications

  • Five years experience working in one or more of the following fields: application development, system-development, mainframe programming, information technology, network operations, or a related field. (Required)
  • Extensive experience in developing and maintaining large-scale enterprise applications. (Required)
  • Experience in mainframe programming including but not limited to a foundation with legacy platforms like COBOL, CICs, and JCL, along with the ability to adapt and integrate with modern technologies. (Required)
  • Experience and strong knowledge with mainframe RDBMS databases, such as DB2, & expertise in SQL for data retrieval & manipulation. (Required)
  • Expertise of development methodologies, best practices, and design patterns. (Required)
  • Extensive experience with debugging tools such as IBM Fault Analyzer, IBM FileManager for Z/OS, IBM FileManager for DB2, CADB2, Z/Os Debugger Terminal Interface Manager, Spufi, CEDF, QMF or equivalent (Required)
  • Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues. (Required)
  • Experience participating in activities to advance an inclusive environment that values equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging. (Required)
  • Seven or more years experience working in one or more of the following fields: application development, system development, mainframe programming, information technology or network operations. (Preferred)
  • Experience in complex higher education environments, serving academic and administrative functions of a large public university. (Preferred)
  • Experience with modernization efforts, such as migrating legacy applications to contemporary platforms. (Preferred)
  • Techniques for identifying and resolving issues in mainframe applications. (Required)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders. (Required)
  • Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers. (Required)
  • Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and deliver concurrent projects to various stakeholder types. (Required)
  • Advanced problem-solving skills; ability to uncover root of difficult problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines as well as awareness of vision and strategy. (Required)
  • Seeks information from multiple and diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity. (Required)
  • Thinks creatively and introduces innovations such as the incorporation of new technologies or processes. Thrives in an ever-changing, fast-paced environment. (Required)
  • Knowledge of modern integration techniques, such as CTG, APIs, web services, microservices, and knowledge of mainframe security best practices. (Preferred)
  • Familiarity with Assembler, Rexx and CList, Focus, PLI, SAS,CA-Scheduler, CA Endevor, GoAnywhere MFT or equivalent, as well as knowledge of mainframe security best practices. (Preferred)

  • Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

  • Bachelor's Degree in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of experience/training. (Required)

  • Special Conditions for Employment

    • This position is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that includes regular visits to campus as needed (for those who work remotely, travel/lodging expenses are not eligible for reimbursement).

      The anticipated pay range for this position is $136,980-$150,768, annually; salary is dependent upon the skills and experience of the selected finalist.
