ASL/English Interpreter - Casual - Military Veterans

Johns Hopkins University seeks experienced, nationally certified ASL/ English Interpreters - Casual . The Interpreters will serve as designated interpreters for a faculty member in the Department of Cognitive Science. This position is responsible for hourly interpreting services and collaboratively supporting and teaming with other interpreters. Reports to the Lead ASL Interpreter.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provides ASL/English transliteration for on-demand and regularly scheduled meetings, talks, classes, and other functions. Assignments may be a combination of recurring and one-time appointments. There may be occasional travel for conferences and invited talks.
  • Adheres to the NAD-RID Code of Professional Conduct.
  • Provides flexibility in scheduling, occasionally accommodating evenings and weekends, and on-call shifts.
  • Communicates with appropriate faculty, staff, and students to obtain preparation materials for appointments and shares prep materials with interpreters in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records on the use of interpreting services for departmental reporting requirements.
  • Stays abreast of best practices in interpreting services and resources.
  • Attends trainings to stay current on Designated Client?s research, related vernacular, and working in an academic environment.
  • Performs other related work as needed.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

  • Knowledge of psycholinguistics, linguistics, cognitive science, computer science, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated ethics training and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated evidence of successfully interpreting in a rigorous and fast-paced academic environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in accomplishing detailed organizational tasks within established deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) and English fluency.
  • 4 years related interpreting experience, preferably in post-secondary settings.
  • Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Eight plus years of interpreting experience in post-secondary settings.
  • Current national certification as ASL/English Interpreter.
  • Have and maintain Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) membership (national) and membership in at least one affiliate chapter of RID.
