Environmental Social Sciences at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability is a new and rapidly growing department. The mission of the department is to shed light on the causes of humanity's sustainability challenges, to design and evaluate potential business strategies, public policies, and behavioral interventions to meet these challenges, and to educate future scholars and leaders who will further our vision of understanding and solving these challenges.
The Environmental Social Sciences Department is seeking an experienced student services professional who will work under the general supervision of the Director of Finance and Operations and will be an integral part of an inaugural student services team. The ideal candidate must possess and demonstrate a positive outlook on continuous process improvement efforts while maintaining a team-based and customer-focused mindset. The position is responsible for administering, implementing, and interpreting university and department policies and procedures on issues regarding admission, financial aid, housing, registrar services, visa services, student life, advising, career counseling, academic services, and postdoctoral affairs. Your Responsibilities will include*:
- Independently manage all aspects of graduate programs, including interpretation of policies, analysis and problem solving for oftentimes complex and sensitive issues, and advising/recommending action plans. Analyze and recommend program improvements.
- Work with the Admissions Committee to support annual processes. Evaluate and make recommendations on program eligibility and suitability and review decisions made by other ESoS staff.
- Provide advice and counsel to students on a range of issues including, but not limited to, academic progress, academic program policies, career plans, accessibility, community standards, etc., to guide them in making appropriate choices and decisions. Triage and recommend solutions for complex and sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality at all times. Escalate issues to a senior advisor where necessary.
- Oversee course scheduling, Stanford Bulletin entries, room scheduling, and other logistics related to academic operation. Continuously assess operations and develop recommendations to optimize.
- Manage postdoctoral and visiting scholar appointments.
- Maintain knowledge of individual student coursework and interests and apprise students of relevant research, fellowship, and scholarship opportunities. Participate in related student recruitment and selection.
- Provide a first line response to identify students in crisis and refer to appropriate resources, as needed.
- Collect and analyze data from multiple sources including student feedback, surveys, trend reports, and data analytics. Prepare and summarize reports and make recommendations to enhance offerings, such as programs and courses, and to influence current processes and policies. Identify gaps in data, additional data sources, or additional analysis that could be helpful in enhancing ESoS programs and courses.
- Oversee and implement the setup and maintenance of financial aid and other support for all graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
- Identify trends, perform needs analysis, and participate in the implementation and testing of new technology.
- May develop marketing materials and strategies for program activities and outreach functions. Assist in planning and developing webinars, education fairs, and other external functions. Develop and execute outreach strategies, nurture community relationships, and represent ESE externally.
- May provide oversight of financial processes such as budgets, financial reimbursements, data entry, reviewing terms and conditions regarding contracts, understanding vendor requirements, and following up and resolving issues.
- May train and supervise other staff, volunteers, students, and temporary workers.

To be successful in this position, you will need :
Education & Experience :
Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities :
- Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information.to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management.
- Advanced analysis and problem-solving skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Advanced customer service skills and attention to detail.
- Relevant computer systems/technology experience.
- Understanding of financial transactions.
- Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations.
In addition, our preferred qualifications include :
- Student Services experience.
- Knowledge of Stanford University systems and policies.
- Must be able to take initiative and exhibit good judgment in all areas of responsibility.
- Experience planning and coordinating events.
- Experience with web site maintenance, preferably using Drupal.

The expected pay range for this position is $91,874 to $108,373 per year.
