Research Laboratory Tech Assoc - Military Veterans

at HERC- Upper MidWest

We are searching for a Research Laboratory Technician Associate to work with a dynamic research group comprised of neurologists and basic scientists performing research focused on neurodegenerative conditions affecting the central and peripheral nervous systems, including neuropathy, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Alzheimer?s disease and related dementias. This individual will primarily support research related to neurodegeneration and brain health.

The Research Laboratory Technician Associate will work closely with the research team to:

  • Collect, process, and analyze laboratory animal samples, including blood/serum and tissues.
  • Process dissected tissue samples, including OCT and paraffin embedding, sectioning, etc.
  • Perform immunohistochemistry (immunostaining) and advanced cell imaging, including laser-scanning confocal imaging.
  • Use common laboratory computer programs, such as Metamorph, Imaris, NanoDrop, Photoshop, Excel, MATlab, and Prism.
  • Perform molecular biology techniques, like PCR (standard and quantitative), RNA/DNA/Protein isolations, Western Blotting, electrophoresis, and tissue sectioning.
  • Conduct animal research and husbandry; responsibilities may include administering impaired glucose tolerance tests, injections, recording weekly body weights and glucose levels, animal behavior testing (cognitive phenotyping, mechanical and thermal thresholds), nerve conduction velocities, and inputting data into our laboratory?s information management system.
  • Assist with coordination of research team activities, project planning, and training.
  • Other tasks as needed.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences or a related field.
  • Must be comfortable with animal work and husbandry.
  • Organization, attention to detail, punctuality, and flexibility required.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision as required.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with others in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be proficient with standard computer and analysis software and willing to learn new programs as needed.
  • Experience working in scientific research desired, with a skillset that includes molecular biology, histology, and imaging techniques.
  • Experience with specific techniques, including cell culture, immunofluorescence, DNA/RNA isolation, qPCR, animal handling, and sample collection desired.
  • Possess the fine motor skills necessary for cellular and tissue micro-dissection.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, GraphPad Prism, Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator, and Metamorph desired.
