The Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing (CBB) at the University of Iowa is seeking to add a Core Facility Research Assistant or Core Facility Research Professional to its dedicated professional staff. As a member of this team, the new hire will help to manufacture protein products as a part of our contract development and manufacturing (CDMO) organization. Reporting to the Director of Operations, the new hire will learn an overview of both the fermentation and purification processes required for pilot scale manufacturing of proteins, eventually focusing their work on either fermentation or purification. In 1995, we opened our new laboratory at The University of Iowa Research Park (previously called Oakdale Research Park) North of the University of Iowa, where our multidisciplinary faculty has continued to dedicate themselves to education, research, and technology transfer related to biocatalysis and bioprocessing. We are proud that in the past two decades our scientists have routinely made significant contributions to the advancement of science while working with industrial, governmental, and academic clients. We also have continued to work to bring life science-based companies to Iowa. Today, the CBB consists of a growing number of more than 50 faculty members and more than 300 researchers, including graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral scientists, technicians, and visiting faculty and industrial scientists. Our faculty members come from ten different departments, and we are home to more than 20 predoctoral fellows. Our principal areas of study include biocatalyst fundamental properties, bioremediation, bioprocessing, new biocatalyst discovery, novel biocatalyst applications, biosensing technology, and reactive agent development. Qualifications Core Facility Research Professional (PRW2-4A): Education or Equivalency Required A Bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Required Qualifications At least 1-3 years of industry related experience in biomanufacturing processes. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills. Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner and utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals and needs. Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record keeping. Highly Desirable Qualifications At least 1-3 years of industry related experience in upstream (fermentation) or downstream (purification) biomanufacturing processes. Demonstrated experience in leadership roles, for example a) technical training of personnel, b) developing SOP's, and c) professional mentoring of junior staff. Experience in technical interactions directly with clients. Desirable Qualifications More than three years of experience in industrial protein manufacturing and/or fermentation, including scale-up. Familiarity with biomanufacturing processes and regulations. Skills in standard sterile technique and handling cell cultures. Demonstrate a working knowledge and experience with facility operations. Experience working with solution volumes larger than 100L. Experience with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Qualifications Core Facility Research Assistant (PRW1-3A): Education or Equivalency Required An Associate's degree from a biotech or bioprocessing program, or a bachelor's degree in chemistry, biology, or a closely related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required. Required Qualifications Ability to perform tasks that require accuracy, attention to detail, including accurate record keeping and process documentation. Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and relationship management skills. Demonstrate working proficiency with Microsoft Office software, (Excel, Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). Demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and civil manner and utilize existing resources and learning to achieve or exceed desired outcomes of current and future organizational goals and needs. Highly Desirable Qualifications Six months to one year of relevant laboratory or biotech industry experience. Demonstrate working knowledge and experience with fermentation processes. Demonstrate working knowledge and experience with protein purification. Demonstrate working knowledge and experience with cGMP manufacturing. Basic knowledge of, or skills in, packing of chromatographic columns. Desirable Qualifications Basic familiarity with biomanufacturing processes and regulations. Basic skills in standard sterile technique and handling cell cultures. Demonstrate a working knowledge and experience with facility operations. Experience in using analytical techniques to prepare solutions. Experience working with volume solutions larger than 100L.
