As part of a hardworking team of diverse specialists, technicians, and engineers the candidate leads the development and best practices for detailed and assembly drawings for Crew and Life Support Systems (CLSS) flight hardware parts and ground support equipment for the MK2 Crewed Lander crew module and reviews and approves design changes using CAD tools. Guides team on developing, maintaining, and submitting for release engineering drawings, systems designs and/or engineering documentation and data by applying company, industry, and governmental standards. The CLSS Chief Designer creates, develops, and maintains systems designs by applying good engineering judgment in preparing design layouts, modifying existing designs and assisting in identifying design discrepancies. The candidate supports critical system level trade studies which require solid analysis and engineering fundamentals. The CLSS Chief Designer supports engineering system design and functionality, along with validation activities.







Specifically, you will lead your team’s impact on all aspects of designing, building, testing and flying all of the CLSS flight hardware. CLSS is composed of the essential hardware to allow humans to safely work liver and inhabit space include Extra Vehicular Activities. The CLSS Environmental Control and Life Support System circulates air around the vehicle picking up carbon dioxide, humidity and trace contaminants to be scrubbed and provides oxygen for breathing. The internal cabin pressure is maintained and monitored. Clean drinking water is provided to the crew. The ECLS system also monitors air quality as well as emergencies such as rapid depressurization and fire and counteracts them. We provide the flight deck, payloads utilization, audio/camera, and stowage systems. We provide the flight suit and its interfaces as well as the required support to the EVA suits. We provide all of the crew habitability hardware from toilets to sleeping accommodations. We practice hardware rich design development.

  • Responsibilities include but are not limited to:







  • Take on our most challenging designs which could impact critical functionality and performance of the subsystem for the Crew and Vehicle mission success







  • Provide leadership to the designers allocated to the CLSS integrated product teams whether direct hire, on loan from other business units or contracted labor







  • Establish best practices, and make sure the team is following them







  • Adopt Blue’s design processes, apply them to the team, and manage the team through the process.







  • As a creative problem solver with good organizational skills, tackle difficult designs and work with your team and multiple disciplines







  • Advance designs using engineering principles such as fluids, thermal or stress before getting formal analysis.







  • Utilize CAD tools (Creo and Windchill) in design solutions from preliminary stage to manufacturing readiness







  • Apply Design for Manufacturing (DFM) knowledge







  • Apply Geometric Dimension and Tolerancing (GD&T)







  • Review drawings from the team and bill of materials for release







  • Iterate designs using rapid prototyping for mechanical, structural, fluid, and air system designs







  • Mentor Junior Designers







  • Adhere to Blue Leadership Principles








Minimum Qualifications:









  • BS in related engineering field







  • Experience with CREO and Windchill







  • Senior design experience (minimum 5 years)







  • Experience leading medium to large technical teams







  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion







  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.








Preferred Qualifications:









  • MS in related engineering field







  • Experience with Blue Origin processes







  • Worked on a NASA crewed spaceflight program







  • Experience with Crew and Life Support Systems







  • Experience with development and flight certification of hardware for delivery to integration and test










Compensation Range for:

CO applicants is $153,839.25-$215,374.95;WA applicants is $162,465.75-$227,452.05
