Who will you be working with?
You'll be joining our innovative Wabtec Bus Solutions division, a team dedicated to developing leading systems for the Transit Bus & Rail industries including e-Bus charging systems, innovative passenger door systems, access ramps, and wheelchair lifts. Our group combines technical expertise with a deep understanding of product requirements to deliver industry-leading solutions and lasting value to our customers and the communities they serve.
How will you make a difference?
As a key member of the Wabtec Bus Solutions division, you will have technical ownership for the design and development of mechanical products including doors, baseplates and auxiliary components. You'll design, analyze, and troubleshoot mechanical systems, working as an integral part of Bus Solutions' Engineering team. Reporting to the Engineering Supervisor - Door Systems, you'll contribute significantly to the team's success in developing innovative mechanical and electro-mechanical solutions for the transportation industry.
What do we want to know about you?
We would like to know if you meet the following criteria:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field.
- 7+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, with a focus on door systems preferred.
- Strong knowledge of engineering principles, practices, and procedures.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks / Creo (Pro E)
- Understanding of mechanical design, analysis, and manufacturing processes.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to provide clear direction and constructive feedback.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to identify and resolve technical issues efficiently.
What will your typical day look like?
- Design and develop mechanical products based on customer specifications and technical requirements
- Analyze product or equipment specifications and performance requirements to determine designs, which can be produced by existing manufacturing or processing facilities and methods
- Determine feasibility of designing new equipment considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.
- Provide technical information materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range plant and product engineering planning.
- Confer with research personnel to clarify or resolve problems and develop design
- Prepare or direct preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics
- Direct and coordinate manufacturing or building of prototype products or systems
- Compile and analyze operational, test, and research data to establish performance standards for newly designed or modified equipment or product.
- Design and modify designs of electro and pneumatic door actuation systems; sheet metal components, along with other design structures related to door systems.
- Evaluate engineering test results for possible application to developments of systems or other uses
- Troubleshoot ongoing mechanical system issues, including evaluating customer returns
- Work with Wabtec Bus Sales and Field Service teams to investigate and resolve bus customer issues
- Prepare mechanical system test procedures for product validation testing
- Participate in technical discussions and correspondence with customers' technical liaisons
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills with fellow employees and customers
- Support and assist supervisor and co-workers to meet deadlines
What about the physical demands of the job?
- Primarily office-based work at the Buffalo Grove office
- Occasional travel (5%) to customer sites may require standing, walking, and navigating transportation facilities.
- Ability to use a computer and various software applications for mechanical design for extended periods
- Occasional need to build and assemble prototype and engineering test systems
- Occasional need to inspect and work with physical mechanical components and systems in an office, laboratory, on the manufacturing floor, and on transit buses.
- Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
You may also be asked to perform other duties outside of your function or trade, for which adequate training will be provided if necessary.
