Surface SONAR Technician - Military Veterans

The Surface SONAR Technician supporting MARMC Codes 286/287 at Naval Station Norfolk performs standardized or prescribed assignments involving a sequence of related operations, follows standard work methods on recurring assignments but receives explicit instructions on unfamiliar assignments. Technical adequacy of routine work is reviewed on completion; non-routine work may be reviewed in progress. This technician performs at this level, one or a combination of such typical duties as:
- Following specific instructions, assembles or constructs simple or standard equipment or parts, servicing or repairing simple instruments or equipment;
- Conducting a variety of tests using established methods, preparing test specimens, adjusting and operating equipment, recording test data, and pointing out deviations resulting from equipment malfunction or observational errors;
- Extracting engineering data from various prescribed but non-standardized sources, processing the data following well-defined methods including elementary algebra and geometry, and presenting the data in prescribed form
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide engineering and technical support, system testing, inspection, repair, replacement and assessment assistance on Sonar Systems and equipment (all mods), peripherals and interfaces installed on US Navy Ships, Foreign Military ships and land-based facilities. These systems will include Hull Mounted Sonars, Towed Arrays Systems, Sonobuoy Receiving Systems, On-Board Training Systems, and In-Situ measurement systems such as Wet Dome Phase Test Equipment and In-Water Collection Boxes. Specific systems include AN/SQS-53(), sonars, subsystems, transducers, and stave cables; AN/SQR-19, AN/SQQ-28 and AN/SQQ-89 OBT systems and sub-systems.
- Must become proficient in drafting Material Assessment Forms (MAF), Technical Assistance Visit Reports (TAVR) and providing INSURV reports using PRISMS program/software. This requires a proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word and Excel especially).
- Review, assess, maintain, and provide recommendations for revisions, updates, and changes to technical documentation relative to the systems listed above.
- Provide scheduling, coordination, and documentation using government provided applications such as MARMC technical assistance and assessment support process.
- Perform maintenance and repair to MARMC's towed array handling winch. This may include replacing filters, hydraulic fluids, O-rings and hoses.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3 years full time hands-on technician level specialized experience within the last 5 years in troubleshooting and repair of SQS-53 (B, C and D) systems and subsystems including repair and replacement of transducers and stave cables in both non-pressurized and pressurized sonar dome environments
- 6 years full time hands-on technician level general experience within the last 10 years troubleshooting, repair, logistic support of sonar or equivalent systems and subsystems
- Must meet qualifications for certification as a Sonar Dome Diver
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Must have an active secret US government clearance. Note: US citizenship is required to maintain a secret clearance.
Preferred Experience:
- Operational experience in the US Navy in a technical field or as a Sonar Technician (Surface or Submarine)
