Assistant Professor in Academic Writing and Reading - Military Veterans

Job Description

Metro State University, a member of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities System, is seeking to hire a full-time, probationary (tenure-track) Assistant Professor in Academic Writing and Reading. This is a position within the Writing, Literature, and Language department and will start on August 18, 2025.

Responsibilities

Faculty members are expected to:

  • Demonstrate the ability to teach Academic Writing courses effectively to a post-traditional student population and contribute to meaningful assessment of student learning.
  • Engage in scholarly activity, creative achievement, and/or research.
  • Provide evidence of continuing preparation and study.
  • Contribute to student growth and development through advising and assistance.
  • Engage in service to the university and community.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving a diverse student body by delivering a student-centered education and using approaches that support equitable outcomes for all students.
  • Provide excellent learning environments through in-person, online, and/or hybrid course modalities.


Minimum Qualifications
  • PhD in English, Rhetoric & Composition, Writing Studies, TESOL, or Applied Linguistics. Doctoral program must be successfully completed within 5 years to meet the requirement for tenure.
  • Demonstrated interest in faculty position that prioritizes teaching and emphasizes teaching excellence.
  • A plan for scholarly activity and/or research in Writing Studies.
  • Effective communication skills (written & verbal) to communicate with a variety of persons and groups.
  • Demonstrated experience working collaboratively with students and colleagues who are culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse.
  • Demonstrated commitment to general education writing programs


Preferred Qualification
  • A completed terminal degree in the specified disciplines.
  • Secondary interest, evidenced through educational background and teaching experience or scholarship, in at least one of the following areas: writing in the disciplines, scholarly writing, multimodal composition, developmental writing, writing across the curriculum, and writing program administration.
  • Community-engaged research and/or teaching experience.
  • Ability to design and teach creative, rigorous, and organized online writing courses with high-touch instructor presence.
  • Evidence of high engagement with students outside of the classroom (mentoring, student publications, student research, etc.).
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to serve program goals and initiatives
  • Experience and interest in working with adult students.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness teaching at a post-secondary level.
  • Experience developing writing curricula at a post-secondary institution.
  • Demonstrated contributions to assessment of student learning at a post-secondary institution.
  • Professional development and/or expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy, anti-racist pedagogy, and/or universal design.
  • Experience as an academic advisor for students at post-secondary institution.

The College of Liberal Arts, located in St. Paul, MN, consists of programs in humanities, social sciences, communications, and the arts. These fields constitute the beating heart of a university education and of a society committed to socially equitable progress. Writing, Literature, and Language

The Department of Writing, Literature, and Language oversees the general education writing curriculum, including courses focused on the writing process, research writing, academic reading, writing in the disciplines, and integrated writing and information literacy instruction. Our department is collaborative and innovative with a focus on hands-on learning, community-engaged courses, and culturally responsive pedagogy. Faculty of color are encouraged to apply.

Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement.

Employment for this position is covered by the collective bargaining agreement for the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) which can be found at on the Minnesota State Employee and Labor Relations website .
