What You Will Do MST Division in collaboration with Sigma division are seeking qualified applicants for a group of entry level Research Technicians (1/2). The candidates selected will join a cohort of other Research Technicians that will complete a rotational program between teams in MST and Sigma to gain an experience in several roles and organizations. The selected candidates will be expected to perform research alongside Scientists, Engineers, and Technologists in the field of materials science on problems related to fabrication and the structure/property relations of materials. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on individual who will, under the supervision of mentors, address both applied and basic research or fabrication problems. The position requires a team player with an excellent work ethic, high-level of initiative and curiosity, and a commitment to safety, and quality. MST and Sigma Divisions house a collection of unique prototyping, fabrication, and research facilities that specialize in providing material, components, and manufacturing science to the Los Alamos experimental programs. The experimental mission spans the US nuclear weapons program, DoD, work with universities, Intelligence Agencies and many other customers. As part of this mission, we work with a broad range of materials from stainless steel and aluminum to other materials such as ceramics, uranium and beryllium. At the end of the one-year cohort program, it is expected that each candidate will work with their mentor to identify a preferred team to join. Performance of job responsibilities may involve exposure to hazards that include radiation generating devices, radioactive materials, acids/bases, organic solvents and other hazardous materials.

Research Technician 1 ($47,400 - $73,200)

- Aptitude for hands-on work with laboratory equipment.
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, procedures, plans and Laboratory requirements.
- Basic knowledge of and experience in computer systems and applications.
- Ability to obtain a "Q" clearance, which normally requires US citizenship.
- Ability to obtain Human Reliability Program certification.
Additional requirement for 2 level.
- Basic knowledge of and experience with hand and power tools.
- Demonstrated ability to grow technical skillsets through work experience and continuous learning
- Experience working with measurement equipment (multimeters, micrometers, balances, transducers, thermometers, etc.).
Education/Experience for Research Technician 2: Position requires a High School diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience in fabrication, characterization, and testing of materials. Ability to develop synthesis/manufacturing and processing methods for materials.
- Hands-on experience in a manufacturing or research environment
- Experience in supporting scientific experiments using analytical or research equipment.
- Experience in the safe handling hazardous materials.
- Experience with problem solving on projects
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 2 years.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements : To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
426.2: This position is subject to DOE Order 426.2, Personnel Selection, Training, and Qualification Requirements for DOE Nuclear Facilities, which establishes entry-level requirements to ensure candidates selected for specific positions can successfully perform the requirements of the job.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
