Position Title: Department Chair of Computer Science Appointment Type: Faculty Job Description: Summary of Duties and Responsibilities: The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa seeks a tenured full professor and department chair for the Department of Computer Science. Nominations and applications for a visionary leader with demonstrated computer science and/or related experience are sought. Candidates are expected to demonstrate a commitment to continued excellence in discipline-leading education of undergraduate and graduate students, and interdisciplinary and international research programs. InitialChairappointmentisforfiveyearswithformalreviewduringyearfour.Thisappointment serves at the pleasure of the dean, and will be filled as a 9-month appointment. Proposed Start Date:July 1, 2025. The successful applicant for this position is expected to: Provide visionary leadership for the department to serve the needs of faculty, staff, students, stakeholders, and citizens to fulfill the land-grant mission of the department, college, and university Serve both the department and deans office in accomplishing their missions, and be a collaborative member of the colleges leadership team across all missions and 21 departments Stimulate and facilitate excellence and impact in all aspects of teaching, research, outreach, and service Build, encourage, and foster highly functioning and cross-disciplinary teams and collaborations within the department and with other units and key partners internal and external to the university Recruit and retain a strong student body of undergraduate and graduate students who are prepared to enter the profession Foster an environment in which all faculty and staff work to realize the departments purposes and are accountable for their performance Recruit and retain talentedpeople in all department positions, in line with the strategic plans of the department, college, and university Assist faculty and staff to obtain resources through extramural funding by encouraging a culture of collaboration and innovation Communicate effectively the mission, vision and strengths of the department and college within Iowa State University and to external stakeholders and collaborators in the public and private sectors Nurture and maintain good alumni relations and build alumni support Required Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. or academic equivalent in Computer Science or a closely aligned field Must meet the university, college, and department requirements for appointment as tenured full professor Preferred Qualifications: A vision for growth and development of the department, including the departments fit and role in interacting with other units at the university Demonstrated record of administrative experience in areas such as personnel management and budgeting Evidence of generating sustained external funding A strong record of excellence in research and teaching Department/Program & College Description: The department is located in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences which offers an outstanding learning and research community. LAS educates students to become global citizens, providing rigorous academic programs in the sciences, humanities, and social sciences within a supportive personalized learning environment. LAS has approximately 8,000 students among 21 departments, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication, and more than 20 additional cross-disciplinary programs. Our faculty members teach roughly 42 percent of all undergraduate student credit hours at Iowa State University, and the college offers nearly 50 baccalaureate degrees, in addition to Ph.D. and masters degrees. The Computer Science department currently consists of 32 full-time tenure-track faculty members, 8 of whom are NSF CAREER Award winners, and 12 term faculty members. We offer B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science and an MS in Artificial Intelligence. We are critical partners for a B.S. in Software Engineering and in Data Science. The combined enrollment is over 1500 undergraduates and almost 210 graduate students. We have strong research and educational programs in Algorithms and Complexity, Artificial Intelligence, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Data Mining, Data Science and Machine Learning, Information Security, Molecular Programming, Multimedia Systems, Operating Systems and Networks, Robotics, and Software Engineering . These research projects are supported by ~$11 million annual departmental expenditures from grant and contract awards. A dynamic and collegial faculty, a strong graduate program, and a well-funded research program provide an excellent academic environment. In addition, cutting-edge research and education is facilitated by departmental participation with interdisciplinary programs in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Human-Computer Interaction, the Laurence H. Baker Center for Bioinformatics and Biological Statistics, the Center for Integrative Animal Genomics, the Cyber Innovation Institute, the Information Assurance Center, the Department of Energy's Ames Laboratory, the Virtual Reality Application Center, and the Dependable Data Driven Discovery Institute.
