Carpenter Apprentice NOT AVAILABLE FOR VISA SPONSORSHIP Job Description : Assist Journeyperson with all aspects of the carpentry trade, maintaining shop machinery, tools, equipment, and reading/interpreting blue prints. Gain knowledge and experience during the apprentice training period. Upon successful completion of apprenticeship, employee will be classified as a Journeyperson. Subject to shift changes and extended working hours (including nights, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays) to meet seasonal work demand. Subject to working in weather related extremes of heat and cold for extended periods. Must be free of debilitating allergies, such as to dust or bees, or have the ability to manage such allergies. This job provides the opportunity to work in a team environment with staff who take great pride in the work that they perform. Doors and the associated hardware with doors are integral to the Cornell campus. This includes but is not limited to Installation and maintenance of door hardware, auto operators, key cutting and cylinder set up. This is rewarding work that supports the university's mission of teaching, research and outreach. This position is covered by the BTC Collective Bargaining Agreement. Starting rate of pay for a Carpenter Apprentice is $23.94. Required Qualifications : Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Excellent verbal and written skills, customer relations skills, and the ability to work in a team environment. Must belong to the local Carpenter Union or be willing to join within 30 days after starting employment at Cornell. Must have and maintain a valid US driver's license; may be required to operate a motor vehicle (your own vehicle or Cornell-owned) to travel to/from job sites. Good customer relations, interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Required to inspect and work in crawl spaces, attics, laboratories, ventilation equipment, mechanical rooms, mechanical shafts, sub basements and confined, isolated areas. Access to these may be by ladder or scaffold tower on platforms up to 100' high. Risk exposure to asbestos, toxic vapors, heat, cold, height and accumulated dirt. Use of employer provided safety equipment, including a respirator, is required. Must be available to work overtime as duties require, including weekends. Possibility of shift work. Delivers heavy material to job sites. Must have ability to ascend and descend heights, have agility and freedom of movement, ability to climb stairs, ladders and scaffold, and ability to move easily in confined spaces. Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications : Work experience in the carpentry field and formal training beyond high school strongly desired.
