DESCRIPTION

Michael Baker International is seeking a talented Senior Rail Bridge Engineer, to help make a difference in our Rail and Transit Practice. In this role, you will report to the Director of Rail Bridges and Structures in Cleveland, OH. Per your preference, we offer flexibility to work hybrid, fully remote, or onsite in any of our 100+ office locations nationwide. The ideal candidate will demonstrate experience on design projects for US Class I railroads and/or rail transit agencies and be able to support projects and offices across the country for railroads, transit agencies, and DOTs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform railroad bridge design and detailing tasks incorporating AREMA Manual for Railway Engineering practices.
  • Perform structural analysis and preparation of structural engineering calculations using design software as well as hand calculations.
  • Develops/implements project plans/methodologies for complex projects, varying between single and multi-discipline practices.
  • Collaborate with project staff to outline and execute a workplan and mentor younger engineers through projects by assigning design tasks and supporting development and understanding of design approach and issues.
  • Perform bridge condition evaluations through inspection and load ratings.
  • Lead execution of engineering investigations, including feasibility and type studies with cost and risk analysis.
  • Use advanced bridge analysis/design software including LEAP Products, MIDAS, Mathcad and Excel.
  • Prepare construction plans using Microstation.
  • Prepare construction specifications.
  • Review shop drawings and Contractor Requests for Information.
  • Manage work schedule to meet project deadlines for on-time submittals.
  • Coordinates project activities with other railroad departments and projects
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinates project activities with government agencies as required.
  • Conducts safety meetings and training programs to ensure safety requirements are met.
  • Collects, compiles, and analyzes project files. Organizes and maintains file system and files correspondence and other records for inclusion in reports or presentation materials and memorialization.
  • Builds intimate familiarity with railroad standards, manuals, and policies.
  • Reviews project design and contract plans and specifications for conformance with client technical requirements.
  • Attends on site or virtual meetings with client representatives as required.
  • Train and assist others in rail bridge and retaining wall design.
  • Obtains all required railroad safety certifications and trainings and support safety initiatives.
  • Occasional to moderate travel may be required.
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or related field; Undergraduate focus or Master's Degree in Structural Engineering strongly preferred.
  • 10-15 years of demonstrated experience in bridge design, rehabilitation, and construction with a railroad specialization required.
  • PE license required; NCEES record a plus.
  • Project experience and relationships with US Class I Railroads and/or local Rail Transit agencies required.
  • Familiarity with AREMA standards required.
  • Knowledge of CSX, NS, UP, BNSF, CPKC, and/or CN standards desired.
  • Project experience with local transit agencies and their standards desired.
  • Experience preparing and reviewing rail structure design plans and specifications.
  • Experience in construction phase services.
  • Experience with office software and CADD software.

  • Experience in working on multiple projects concurrently, managing project deadlines and on-time submittals.
  • Possess client management skills and ability to develop and enhance solid client relationships.
  • Ability to travel to other office and job site locations in the region.
  • Ability to work independently as well as within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Strong work ethic and integrity.
WHAT WOULD MAKE ME STAND OUT AS A CANDIDATE?

  • Proven rail bridge and retaining wall technical experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks or projects concurrently.
  • Possess strong initiative and demonstrate a proactive, collaborative approach to project development and communication with project team members, clients, and contractors.
  • Strong relationships with Class I Railroad(s) and local transit agencies and understanding of coordination requirements and preferences.
  • Previous use of CADD software including Bentley products.
  • Experience with construction management and document control for rail construction.
  • Willingness and ability to mentor and advise young staff on rail projects, operations, and engineering best practices
COMPENSATION

The approximate compensation range for this position is $97,598- $153,731 per year. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.
