Key Responsibilities

Working under general supervision, specifies, provides and manages Safety support on specified projects in accordance with AMAT policies and government regulations in order to control hazards to personnel and equipment and limit liability to the company. Develop and/or implements programs to minimize risk to employees, customer and the environment. Responsible for one or more of the company's  EH&S functions (Product Safety, Site Safety, Lab Safety, Field Service Safety, Environmental, I.H., Ergonomics, etc.) as it relates to a specific division products, processes or work methods

Coordinates the safety aspects of operations and engineering within the company, with customers and other organizations which are related to operations and products and their design. Develops and maintains a thorough knowledge base regarding safety in accordance with area of specialization and expertise in one or more EH&S disciplines that include: Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental, Facilities/Industrial Safety, Product Safety, Lab Safety and Sustainability.

Develop skills to report and present safety related status and issues to EH&S team and business groups. Implements focused, effective programs aimed at resolving customer concerns and complaints regarding safety designed into new products, and ensures that products meet safety requirements at time of shipment.  Report and present safety related status and issues to EH&S team and business groups.  Participates in the evaluation and analysis of concept and feasibility studies. Implements focused, effective programs aimed at resolving customer concerns and complaints regarding safety designed into new products, and ensures that products meet safety requirements at time of shipment

Develops and/or implements programs to minimize risk to employees, customer and the environment. Gathers EH&S information and evaluates results.  Knowledgeable in understanding of EHS standards and policies.

Participates in compliance evaluation of products, programs, and facilities per company and governmental requirements.  Participates in the evaluation and analysis of concept and feasibility studies. Performs product/system safety analysis on components, subsystems, and systems. Prepares periodic and special reports in connection with engineering studies and projects and from liaison with other companies and outside organizations. Investigates accidents and specifies corrective action programs

Manage 3rd party Product Safety tool assessments and drive corrective actions within the various internal organizations.

Evaluates and specifies work methods, design requirements, procedures and policies.  Gathers EHS information and evaluates results. Administers EH&S safety training programs.

Participates in compliance evaluation of products, programs, and facilities per company and governmental requirements.    Investigates accidents and specifies corrective action.   Able to use 8D, FMEA, PHA and other investigation and assessment methods.

Has working knowledge and understanding of regulatory requirements, codes and standard in their EH&S discipline.  Evaluates and specifies work methods, design requirements, procedures and policies.

Other Requirements: This position may require standing for extended periods of time, walking, working in tight spaces, bending, squatting, twisting, kneeling, reaching, lifting, the ability to distinguish between colors, the ability to work in an environment with noise that may be difficult for some individuals with sensitivity to noise, and the use of hand and power tools.

Additionally, because this position also may involve working in a clean room, the use of appropriate Personal Protective Equipment such as coveralls, hoods, booties, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, chemical aprons, and face shields may be required.

As the Safety Engineer for Applied Materials RD&E and Manufacturing operations in Gloucester, MA you will work closely with site management in Facilities, Manufacturing, RD&E and other EHS staff to drive EHS programs, ensure regulatory compliance, and promote continuous improvement.

As the Safety Engineer, you will:

  • Use best practices and knowledge of internal or external business issues to improve products or services.
  • Solve complex problems; takes a new perspective using existing solutions.
  • Work independently under general supervision, and act as a resource for colleagues with less experience.
  • Be knowledgeable in Equipment Safety, Chemical Safety, Lab Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental and Facilities/Industrial Safety
  • Ensure EHS programs and management systems in place are effective to minimize the risks to employees, the environment and the community.  
  • Ensure compliance with required EHS codes, standards and regulations, and act as a liaison with regulatory authorities (i.e., local, regional, Federal)
  • Coach learning sessions of Safety and Environmental incidents for EH&S events and drive corrective actions to closure.  Experienced in Operational Learning methods including:  HOP,  Haz-Op, FMEA, PHA and other tools and assessment methods.
  • Review and report Safety progress and performance for assigned site/function based on established EHS metrics to site management.
  • Develop EHS strategies and lead team members to develop action plans for continually improving performance and customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure that specific projects assigned are completed as planned to meet EH&S goals. Provides management with updates and escalation on projects/programs.  Maintain communication channel with site/location functions.
  • Track and trend EHS related legislation and take appropriate action to comply with requirements.  Communicates EH&S issues to all necessary management and employees.
  • Remain knowledgeable of progress made in Safety and Environmental technology. Ensures that applicable advances in technology are incorporated within Applied.
  • Interface with internal and external customers regarding EHS issues.
  • Provide technical guidance on EHS issues to the site Operations and Engineering organizations and contribute to the development of site-wide EH&S standards and procedures.
  • Support EHS programs at multiple sites within Massachusetts.  Travel up to 25%
  • Guide facilities through Applied EHS requirements and assist with program implementation as required.  This includes but is not limited to fully understanding the Applied EHS Management System and associated programs and policies and determining which apply to the Implant Facilities group.
  • Construction/Renovation/Project site walks to perform EHS audits.  Promoting Applied’s EHS standards for all facilities related projects.
  • Providing in person EHS input related to design criteria ensuring that designs meet applicable standards. 
  • Continuing gap analyses to mitigate program deficiencies and evolving working conditions.
  • Participate in on-site design/project review meetings with Facilities, contractors, and stakeholders. 
  • Collaborate with facilities management to stay aligned on goals/targets/objectives.  
  • Required to stand/walk for extended periods of time.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Science or EH&S discipline 4-7 years in EH&S, preferably in a Facilities and/or manufacturing setting

Desired Qualifications:

  • Industry recognized EHS certification such as CSP, ASP, CSHM, CHMM.
  • OSHA 500/501 trainer.
  • ISO 14001/45001 Lead Auditor
  • AutoCAD experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) Trainer
  • HAZMAT Emergency Response experience desired

U.S. Salary Range:

$96,000.00 - $132,000.00

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.

For all sales roles, the posted salary range is the Target Total Cash (TTC) range for the role, which is the sum of base salary and target bonus amount at 100% goal achievement.
