Position Title: Occupational Safety Specialist II Job Group: Professional & Scientific Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelors degree and 3 years of related experience Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in Emergency Management, Public Administration, Organizational Studies or closely related field. Completion of FEMA Professional Development series, ICS 300 and 400, as well as any NIMS ICS All-Hazards Position Specific training. Experience implementing updates to Emergency Plans. Experience implementing and/or conducting Exercises (Seminars, Tabletop, Drills, Functional, or Full Scale Exercises). Experience setting up and operating an Emergency Operations Center or Command Center. Experience implementing and capturing lessons learned from Exercises (AAR, ESR, IAP). Job Description: Summary As an Occupational Safety Specialist II serving as an Emergency Management Specialist (EMS), one reports to the Emergency Management Director within Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S). This role entails being a professional and administrative leader responsible for overseeing various aspects of the emergency management program, covering prevention, protection, mitigation, response coordination, and recovery, as well as supporting their workgroups within and outside EH&S. The EMS plays a significant role in ensuring that essential functions within the university community are prepared to operate during and recover efficiently after crises, disasters, or incidents. They handle both administrative and operational tasks, ensuring that the Emergency Planning Cycle is properly carried out at Iowa State University. To excel in this position, a broad and comprehensive understanding of emergency management, business continuity, emergency operations planning, local hazard mitigation planning, emergency operations center readiness, and disaster recovery operations is essential. Effective collaboration across all levels of the University is also critical. Responsibilities include coordinating the development and implementation of campus emergency preparedness programs through engagement with Iowa State University students, faculty, staff, as well as local and state partners. This will be accomplished by: Working with campus clients to analyze emergency planning needs, evaluate workplace risk exposures and recommending plans and procedures to improve preparedness. developing and administering engaging emergency training and exercise programs. developing after-action reports and implementing corrective action plans. developing campus preparedness, recovery, and mitigation programs through Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) updates and EOP Annex development. Standing up and participating in the Emergency Operations Center during home football games and large-scale events on campus. Serving on internal and external committees and workgroups in support of EH&S initiatives. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship. Example of Duties Inspects University facilities and equipment for safety deficiencies. Develops mitigation strategies and generates written reports. Conducts building emergency readiness reviews. Evaluates safety equipment, emergency procedures, and building, shop and/or laboratory equipment for safety features. Identifies workplace hazards and completes assessment. Assists with hazard mitigation strategies. Completes accident/injury/illness investigations. Uses monitoring equipment and other technologies to analyze and/or control environmental conditions. Assists campus clients with safety concerns, permit conditions, hazardous material storage and inventory assistance, regulatory assistance. Assists in development of signage, posters, and site-specific safety initiatives. Assists campus clients on preparedness for various workplace hazards, including fire, chemical, radiological and/or biological spills/releases, and compressed/liquefied gas usage. Responds to University emergencies that occur during the workday, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays; assists local emergency responders during crisis situations. Reviews and updates written publications and online training materials. Provides safety training to campus clients.
