Assistant Professor of Visual Arts, Foundations/Generalist Emphasis - Military Veterans

Job Summary:

The University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) Visual Arts Department seeks a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor in Foundations with a Generalist visual arts background to be assigned in the Foundations area and other Undergraduate Area of concentration based on the candidate's skills and department needs, We welcome applications from interdisciplinary artists or designers who integrate a digital (screen-based) practice with traditional (studio) methods, in both their creative research and their teaching practice.

The Department of Visual Arts offers B.F.A. degrees with concentrations in Animation, Cinematic Arts, Photography, Print and Intermedia Arts, a B.F.A. in Design, and a B.A. in Visual and Media Arts, and Art History and Museum Studies, as well as an M.F.A. degree in Imaging and Digital Arts. Responsibilities:

? Be dynamic, collaborative, collegial, and willing to contribute to the mission of the Department, College, and University.

? Teach undergraduate foundation courses in support of the B.A. and B.F.A. art and design areas of emphasis, and graduate students in the Intermedia and Digital Arts (IMDA) MFA program.

? Mentor students outside the studio and in independent scholarly and creative activities.

? Work collaboratively with other faculty to maintain the studios and develop a consistent curriculum.

? Engage in scholarly and creative activities expected at an R1 research institution, including exhibitions, screenings, publications, acquiring external funds, and leading externally funded research projects.

? Involve undergraduate and graduate students in research.

? Participate in professional, university, and community service.

? Have excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.

? Provide a positive learning environment that supports the needs of diverse students.

? Develop vision and capacity for growing the 3D curriculum.

? Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair and/or Dean.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

? Keen interest in developing a forward-thinking Foundation curriculum.

? M.F.A. in Visual Art or Design from an accredited institution or university.

? Strong record of creative scholarship or evidence of an active exhibition record.

? Broad training in studio foundations with the ability to teach beginning courses, advanced topics, and specialized seminar courses.

? Minimum of one to two years teaching experience in studio art at the undergraduate level.

? Commitment to the University?s mission and vision of inclusive excellence.

? Ability to communicate effectively in an oral and written format.

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to the minimum qualifications)

? Three years of university-level teaching experience in studio art at the undergraduate level, beyond graduate school teaching.

? Experience with analog and digital methods in one or more of the following areas: photography, printmaking, interactivity, video/film, and/or drawing.

? Ability to integrate digital tools, including 3D fabrication techniques and software, Adobe Creative Suite, and emerging technologies into the curriculum.

? Evidence of equitable considerations, awareness, and practice of curricula development, inclusive practices in educating a diverse student body. Demonstrated experience in one or more of the following: undergraduate mentoring; engagement with programs directed toward diverse and first-generation students; direction and supervision of undergraduate and graduate research.

? Experience managing and leading colleagues in Foundations or other areas of concentration.

? Statement of Teaching Philosophy, (maximum: one page) specifically addressing foundations education.

? Diversity Statement (max. 1-page) discussing your demonstrated commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity in higher education. The statement may answer such questions as: How would you advance UMBC and our department's goal of fostering inclusive excellence? How have you, or would you, engage with programs directed toward diverse and first-generation students? How have you or would you incorporate inclusive practices in educating a diverse student body?
