UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station. The Director of Human Resources Operations resides in the ASOD HR Office and reports to the Assistant Dean of Human Resources. The Director provides overall leadership and management for the HR daily operations service teams and functions. A significant portion of time will be dedicated to the HR Operations teams and serving as the initial escalation point for resolving HR inquiries/issues from within clinical operations and business operations. This position supervises the HR Business Partners/HR Specialist Teams and provides a broad range of HR consultant services to cover areas including, but not limited to, recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, leave administration, time reporting/payroll, performance management, position management, new employee orientation and onboarding, successful offboarding/transitioning, student and temporary employment, reporting and compliance, employee files, etc. This position serves as the Deputy to the Assistant Dean of Human Resources. The Director will act as the initial escalation point for the HR Business Partners and HR Specialists, assisting with problem-solving and offering procedural guidance and training as needed for the HR Operational teams. This position provides consultation and support to department chairs, department managers, administrative managers, and serves as the technical expert lead providing overall direction of human resources operations across all employee types including EHRA , SHRA , Postdoc, Temporaries, and Students. The Director advises on policies and procedures related to recruitment, classification, compensation, employment, performance management, training and development, and serves as a liaison with central HR regarding benefits and leave administration. This position is also responsible for providing an interpretation of University HR policies, providing consultation and advice on general HR issues and concerns, helping carry out both division-level and campus-wide HR strategies and plans, as well as implementing both school-level and university-level HR strategies and plans within the department and school. The Director serves as the subject matter expert within the ASOD related to classification and compensation and is expected to provide guidance to the HRBPs as needed. This position will assist with problem-solving and offering procedural guidance as it relates to class and comp and will be expected to manage and implement school-wide class and comp projects and other projects as assigned by the Assistant Dean of HR. A successful Director will have an innate ability to build strong, trusting and sustainable working relationships, not only within the ASOD HR office and within the ASOD , but also across the campus with other offices such as the Office of the Provost, the Office of HR, the Payroll Office, the Equal Opportunity and Compliance Office, Office of Sponsored Programs, other HR offices/professionals within other schools, and many other professionals across the campus. We are seeking a high-energy, dynamic Director of HR Operations to help drive change in practices and procedures throughout the school, with guidance from the Assitant Dean. Creating and maintaining sustainable, best practices for the ASOD are paramount. A new HR Organizational Design has been created, elevating this position and the HRBP teams as positions of trust, which are vital to bridge the communication and training between units and HR. This new role will help lead this very exciting and impactful change for the Adams School of Dentistry and for the HR Department and is a tremendous professional opportunity to partner with the team to build something extraordinary together! Education and Experience: Experience in a higher education setting, in particular UNC at Chapel Hill, with in depth knowledge of all HR systems/programs. Preference will be given to candidates with experience supporting multiple departments and/or units within a School/College/Unit with an understanding of confidentiality and a thorough knowledge of UNC policies and procedures for BOTH SHRA and EHRA positions. Preference will be given to candidates with experience and in-depth knowledge of appointments, promotions, reappointments and tenure track/tenure review processes. Management/leadership experience is highly preferred. Essential Skills: Graduation from a four-year college or university and demonstrated progressive responsible experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from an appropriately accredited institution. Candidates should exhibit the ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a wide range of people including University and School administrators, faculty, staff and students; possess superior communication, presentation and interpersonal skills; and have the capacity to inspire confidence. This position requires considerable knowledge of the rules, regulations, and policies relating to UNC -Chapel Hill human resources, State of NC and Federal guidelines. This role requires a high level of detail and organization, professionalism and discretion, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to adapt easily, follow through, complete tasks, and resolve issues. The successful candidate will possess knowledge of HR functions, articulate a customer service-focused approach to problem-solving, have excellent computer skills with advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products (including MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint), and possess the ability to work independently on multiple HR-related functions. Experience with the faculty appointment, promotion and tenure review process is required. The successful candidate must have in-depth experience in consulting with internal clients on some combination of recruitment and staffing, compensation and position classification ( FLSA and SHRA / EHRA ), employee relations and/or employee benefits. Must have the ability to dissect a problem and find the fundamental cause and offer a viable and logical solution.
