Campus Security Sergeant | Highline College - Military Veterans

The Campus Security Sergeant is responsible for supervising and training the evening campus security officers in providing excellent customer service to the Highline College community. In addition, the position will assist in the training safety, security, and emergency management procedures for faculty, staff, and students. The position reports directly to the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management. This position is a classified, non-represented, full time position, and is eligible for overtime. Regular work hours are from 4 PM to 12AM, Monday through Friday. Some flexible hours and weekends may be required. Salary Information : The above salary range reflects the starting step of Range 51 (Step A) and ending step (Step M) salary for this classified position and includes a 5% King County compensation provision. As a new classified employee, based on annual increments, it will take 5.5 years to reach Step L on the salary schedule, 11.5 years to reach step M on the salary schedule. This does not reflect any contractual changes; legislative mandated salary increases or Cost of Living Increases (COLA's) that may be approved in the future. Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management, the Campus Security Sergeant will: Shift Management: Assign duties, train and supervise the work of the evening campus security officers to ensure that the shift operations are customer service focused and consistent with the needs of the college community; Write reports covering activity of squad or shift assigned; review and correct reports of subordinate officers; and maintain training records; Evaluate performance of subordinates to determine training requirements and deficiencies; Assist in development and conduct of training programs for campus security and crime prevention training for campus community; Assist in conducting hands on training within the department to ensure proficiency of patrol standards, industry security standards and familiarization with department Standard Operating Procedures; Assists with training new employees during probation period; Assists in creating, revising, and updating standard operating procedures of the department; Assist in the management of the office communications and alarm systems. Typical Work: Investigate complaints of disturbance, accidents, stolen property, or criminal activity; Collaborate with Associate Director of Emergency Management and Transportation on parking enforcement management; Patrol campus buildings and grounds on foot or by vehicle to maintain security; Issue citations for violations of campus regulations; Maintain surveillance of an area suspect for criminal activity; Provides professional customer service when dealing with stressful situations and utilizes a proactive approach to identifying safety and security hazards by communicating with staff; Functions as a working supervisor at the scenes of incidents, calls for service and special events; Provides maintenance assistance such as: alarm testing, check life safety equipment, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), access control, badging, door integrity checks, etc.. Enforces parking regulations, including citing vehicles; Present crime prevention and personal safety workshops to student and staff groups; Assist with monitoring, reviewing and investigating incidents utilizing the video management system; Respond to service calls and alarms from Campus View residents; Assist city or county police and state patrol in cases of emergency; Picks up and transports currency from various sites and locations, as assigned, to and from the cashier?s office. Emergency Communications: In the evening serve as campus contact for questions and information regarding emergency response and communication; Utilizing the emergency communication system to send messages to the campus community during critical incidents. Other: Ability to be an effective and courteous team member; Assist in the development and implementation of training on safety, security, and emergency management procedures for faculty, staff, and students including such special populations as international students, persons with limited English knowledge, and disabled persons; Effective, engaging communication with students, employees and visitors, consistently modeling excellent customer service, appreciation for diversity, respect and compassion; Perform other related duties as assigned. Knowledge of: Emergency management planning and management including the National Incident Management System; Patrol principles, security standards, crime prevention, crowd control, and safety practices and operations; Pertinent federal, state, city and college rules and regulations regarding public safety and emergency management; Principles and methods of supervision and training. Demonstrated ability to: Be sensitive to and relate effectively with a wide diversity of students, faculty, staff and community members with tact, patience and respect; Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with all components of the college community and the public; Communicate effectively in writing and verbally while under pressure. High School graduation or equivalent; AND Two years of experience in police or campus security. DESIRABLE: Associate?s Degree in criminal justice, emergency management, law enforcement, business administration, public administration or a related field; ICS-300 and ICS-400 courses certification.
