Development Engineer/ Project Manager - Military Veterans

at Chevron Corporation

About the position:

This role collaborates with researchers to understand new and novel technology fundamentals, define uncertainties, and develop a commercialization scale-up plan. Scale-up support includes pilot plant design and operation, conceptual design for commercial plants, early engagements on locating potential pilot and demonstration facilities, and preparing initial decision support documents. The role requires creativity and ingenuity to solve unique engineering challenges that arise from developing new and novel process technologies with little to no precedence for guidance. Additionally, it involves articulating project value and risk trade-offs between alternatives to help determine whether it's beneficial to scale up new and novel Chevron-developed technologies. Role will focus on Chevron's Must-Win Technology Challenges in renewable fuels, hydrogen, and carbon capture & utilization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process Development Services & Project Management: Provide process engineering services and project/program management support for scaling up new and novel technologies. Determine functional requirements and potential uncertainties/risks for translating promising chemistry into continuous chemical processes
  • Responsible for ensuring pilot plant design and quality of information are adequate to transition to designing a commercial-size facility, thereby shortening the technology scale-up timeline
  • Program/Project Engineering Leadership: Use Chevron project management system tools to deliver phase 2 (opportunity shaping) deliverables to support the continuation or termination of new and novel technology scale-up efforts. Leverage a cross-functional group of Chevron experts, contractors, national laboratories, and universities to provide relevant and accurate information for the early phase decision support packages
  • Support the development of Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) by generating relevant heat and material balances, collecting location-specific cost estimates, and working with subject matter experts to evaluate project alternatives and competing technologies. Experienced enough to understand and articulate the value and risk trade-offs between alternatives and competing technologies to influence business unit strategic direction
  • Pilot Plant Engineering Design & Operation: Lead the design, cost estimation, economic analysis, purchasing, construction, commissioning, and operation of larger pilot plants. Provide technical input and oversight for pilot plant start-up and operations, especially for new and novel continuous batch facilities. Travel to contracting offices, pilot plant sites, research facilities, and universities as required
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor degree in Chemical Engineering from a deemed/recognized (AICTE) university
  • Minimum 15 + years of experience with direct experience with petroleum refining or specialty chemical manufacturing. Preference for hands-on operating support and design experience with catalytic systems. Hydrotreating, hydrocracking and fluidize reactors considered a plus
  • Minimum 5 + years of experience in process engineering project management
  • Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience in process engineering calculations and tools
  • Experience with developing & reviewing process deliverables for large capital projects, process equipment sizing & selection, processes with non-Newtonian fluids or high solid content streams and water treatment & discharge systems (ideally for renewable fuel facilities)
  • Expertise in the use and application of process simulators (ProII and HYSYS) and other specialty software (HTRI, FRNC, PipePhase, etc.) to carry out process engineering tasks such as developing heat and material balances, new process design, equipment design/sizing, economic evaluations, and troubleshooting operating problems
  • Experience with developing a major revamp project for a complex processing facility. Tasked with assessing engineering documents provided by a contractor for project support
  • Oversaw commissioning, start-up, and troubleshooting of a new or significantly revamped complex process facility
  • Served as an expert resource for new process reviews, Process Hazard Analysis, Layers of Protection Analysis and P&ID/PFD reviews
  • Proficient in managing stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and promoting collaboration with both internal and external partners
