Director, Otterbein Simulation & Integration Center (OSIC) Job Type: Administrative Staff Job Number: 00376 Location: Westerville, OH Division: Academic Affairs DESCRIPTION Otterbein University is looking for a Director of the Otterbein Simulation and Integration Center who will be under the general direction and supervision of the department chair. They will work in collaboration with nursing course faculty to support nursing student learning and the integration of psychomotor skills and critical thinking by directing the operations of the facilities and staff, and by supporting educational goals of the Otterbein Simulation & Integration Center, Department of Nursing, and Otterbein University by performing the duties described below. Implements plan for security and safety of facilities, equipment, and supplies. Implements an OSIC staffing plan. Supervises and evaluates OSIC staff. Coordinates set up and tear down of simulations, lab activities, and skills testing. Assures sufficient supplies and equipment, including mannequins and simulators to achieve learning outcomes, including annual inventory and life-cycle issues. Operationalizes plan for annual HIPAA and blood borne pathogens testing and tracking student outcomes for regulatory compliance. Maintains and assures accessibility of key personnel to all materials and online resources per departmental and university records retention policies. Teaches BLS classes to faculty and staff. Regularly meets with the Chair for one-to-one supervision and discussion of emerging issues including OSIC policies, budgets, and planning. Collaborates and Communicates Proactively and Effectively to Achieve Learning Outcomes: Participates actively in Department of Nursing committee meetings and meetings of the Faculty Organization. Collaborates with Course Coordinators and other faculty and staff to: Plan OSIC calendars, simulations, and other evidence-based laboratory experiences. Operationalize learning experiences to assure BSN student competency in essential psychomotor nursing skills and their integration with critical thinking in assigned courses. Design, conduct, and debrief nursing simulations consistent with at least International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) best practice guidelines. Implement evaluation tools for essential psychomotor nursing skills and critical thinking, and document student performance in step with course syllabi. Implement a process for identifying and assisting students with specific clinical skills deficits by evaluating student performance, participating in course meetings, providing feedback to faculty on student attendance, policy adherence, and performance in laboratory experiences, and designing and implementing learning contracts. Ensure appropriate lab assignments and evaluations are created, graded, and reported to Course Coordinators. Develop exam questions for clinical courses. Supports and facilitates faculty efforts to assess and remediate as necessary students re-enrolling in a course or re-entering the nursing program to ensure essential psychomotor skills and safety requirements are met to allow them to participate in their upcoming clinical course. Completes Professional Development and Maintains Credentials and Licenses: Actively participates in performance management tasks. Identifies and participates in job-related professional activity as approved by Chair to support daily work and to maintain: Active licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio. Certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE). Status as an American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: OSIC staff, Adjunct Lab Instructors, and student workers. QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform to a satisfactory level each essential duty. Three years' experience as a Registered Nurse. Diverse clinical nursing background. Preferred: Previous teaching experience in a university BSN educational program or nursing staff development capacity. Experience working with high-, mid-, and low-fidelity clinical simulators in an educational laboratory setting. Facilities management experience. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Required: Active license with no unresolved Board action as a Registered Nurse in the State of Ohio. Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor certification, American Heart Association. Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) certification, Society for Simulation in Healthcare. Preferred: Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) certification, National League for Nursing. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Must demonstrate competency in verbal and written English skills. MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Must be competent in general math and dimensional analysis sufficient to calculate medication doses. TECHNICAL SKILLS: Must have strong leadership skills and ability to lead a diverse group and interact professionally with students, faculty, and staff. Must possess management skills necessary for operations and budgeting. Must possess excellent organizational skills. Must possess knowledge of general office procedures, have a working knowledge of applicable safety practices and regulations. Must be student centric. Must take pride in and be thorough in quality of work produced. Must possess skills necessary for developing and providing appropriate learning experiences in assigned courses, including simulation design, production, and debriefing. Must possess skills necessary for developing and implementing appropriate evaluation tools for psychomotor nursing skills and associated clinical judgement. Must possess skills in identifying and assisting students with specific clinical skills deficits and be able to provide feedback, and to write and enforce student learning contracts. Must have knowledge of educational technology software and hardware, particularly in nursing education and simulation, and be able to troubleshoot complex equipment and interface with external support resources. Must be able to use standard office productivity software and cloud-based educational software, network-connected office computer and cloud-based computing, and standard office equipment such as a multifunction device (copier, scanner, facsimile) and telephone. REASONING ABILITY: Must comfortable communicating across all levels of the organization. Must be able to anticipate problems and develop candidate solutions. Must have strong interpersonal skills and positive managerial skills. Must possess excellent attention to details. Must be a team player and must be able to interact collegially with co-workers and other constituencies. Must be student centered. Must be able to plan ahead with existing resources. Must understand how to acquire materials from donor organizations and how to develop plans for additional resources.
