What You Will Do
The Controller Division is seeking to hire a highly motivated, energetic, and customer-focused Accountant 1 to support the Craft payroll team within the Controller Payroll & Benefit (CNTL-PBA) group. The Controller division provides support services on the purchase of products and services to Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).
The selected candidate will report to the Controller Payroll and Benefits Accounting (CNTL-PBA) Craft Payroll Team Leader and will provide support to the mission of the group by; processing payroll, time entry and tracking, validation of payroll related forms, processing terminations, customer service coverage via email, phone or in office for time and labor module inquires. Other duties may include maintaining related records, filing, preparing accounting transactions and documents, documenting and updating procedures, and special projects. This position requires a proven record of excellent attendance and availability to periodically work outside of the normal work week.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Payroll & Accounting
Demonstrated experience as part of a payroll team within a medium to large, complex organization. Knowledge of accounting and financial concepts and principles; working knowledge of related activities gained through specialized work experience. Demonstrated ability in interpreting and upholding company policies and support compliance via payroll/time collection systems, time charging practices, processes, and controls; proactively identifying and assisting in implementing process improvements. Demonstrated ability balancing timecards, payroll gross and net pay. Working knowledge of downstream impacts related to time and effort as it pertains to project costing. Demonstrated awareness of importance of confidentiality and requirements surrounding personally identifiable information (PII).
Problem Solving
Experience and proven ability in researching, troubleshooting, and resolving time and effort issues. Experience gathering, analyzing data, and summarizing results. Experience resolving problems and issues both independently and as a team member.
Communication/Teamwork/Organization
Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer support with strongcommunication skills, both verbal and written; effectively interacting with customers, peers, and management; proven ability to work as a team player and meet stringent deadlines, with interruptions and changing priorities with a high degree of accuracy and accountability.
Technical Experience
Demonstrated understanding of payroll and time and labor system data integration in an ERP to facilitate troubleshooting. Experience with Microsoft Office tool, especially Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
Education/Experience
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration or a related field combined with 2 years relevant experience; or, the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- One (1) year work experience with LANL union craft timekeeping.
- One (1) year work experience with spreadsheets
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
