Laboratory Research Assistant - (240001NV)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Medicine Department of Orthopaedics, Division of Musculoskeletal Sciences is seeking a Laboratory Research Assistant. This position will be within an established musculoskeletal science lab studying bone biology. The successful candidate will work closely with the members of the lab to perform research activities and analysis, maintain a high level of organization and accurate records, and contribute to general maintenance of the laboratory.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Performs laboratory maintenance and research activities under supervision, such as: general housekeeping, preparing chemical solutions and buffers; mouse colony management; and executing procedures such as cell culture, western blotting, mouse tail genotyping, immunostaining, immunofluorescence, real-time PCR, and DNA extractions.
- May participate in the design of research studies.
- Compile and analyze research data using various relevant statistical computer software applications. Coordinate and maintains data reports and database files on progress of research. May receive, inventory, enter, and organize collected data.
- Assist in preparation and editing of manuscripts, presentations, and research proposals by developing, interpreting, and presenting statistical information such as tables, charts, graphs, and other computer graphics.
- Performs administrative duties such as: training and guiding students and/or other laboratory technicians: assisting in developing policies, procedures and/or methods for laboratory experimentation, ordering supplies, and maintaining safety compliance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or in a discipline appropriate to position is required.
Other: Prior lab experience greatly preferred. Must be willing to work with rodent models.
* May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
*Bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate, or Bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research of the clinic or laboratory, as appropriate. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITIES
- Possesses a knowledge of position requirements and able to perform position in compliance with all requirements/regulations/laws.
- Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory. Skill in statistical interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
- Ability to maintain high standards with the work being performed. Assumes personal responsibility for all outcomes; makes effective and timely decisions; and learns how to effectively use technology.
- Maintains productivity and uses strategies to expand knowledge base.
Ability to use measurable and verifiable information to make decisions or judgments. Ability to use a consultative approach to resolve issues in areas of position responsibility. - Effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts. Write and present information in a clear and concise way.
- Work cooperatively with others and demonstrate professional, ethical, respectful, and courteous behavior when interacting with others. Demonstrate pleasant and positive interactions with others.
Based on the duties of this position, selected candidates are not eligible to participate in the Bargaining Unit (Union).
Salary Range: $46,350 - $50,000 per year (Commensurate with education and experience)
