Accounts Payable Accountant - Military Veterans

Job Description

Under general supervision and procedural control, this position is responsible for all accounts payable for North Hennepin Community College ensuring that vendor invoices are handled in a timely and accurate manner in accordance with Federal, State, local, and Minnesota State policies and procedures. Relatedly, the position assists in the oversight and administration of purchasing card activities and reporting, as well as processing student payroll. In addition, the position is accountable for posting receipts to the appropriate programs, projects, and grants in the college's system of financial record. The position will also be responsible for the compilation and reconciliation of the monthly mitigating control documentation.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) sufficient to analyze, interpret, and prepare financial information, records and reports, locate errors, and recommend solutions to procedural and other fiscal problems.
  • Knowledge of acceptable accounts payable business practices.
  • English (speaking, writing, reading) sufficient to communicate effectively, follow verbal and written instructions and perform the job duties of the position.Â
  • Math skills sufficient to calculate, review and reconcile data and balance accounts.Â
  • Computer skills sufficient to effectively manage accounts payable requirements including knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word or similar programs, and the basic principles, practices and techniques of database management. Must be able to set up spreadsheets with formulas using Microsoft Excel or similar program.
  • Ability to design, interpret and explain work procedures and operations and provide advice on fiscal policies and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently to organize and prioritize tasks sufficient to ensure timely completion and handle multiple projects simultaneously with accuracy and a strong attention to detail.
  • Good human relation skills are needed in verbal and written communications to establish and ensure courteous and respectful working relationships with students both on and off-campus, college employees and vendors.
  • Customer service skills sufficient to convey complicated information in an understandable manner as an expert resource for vendor and customers.
  • Physical Demands include sitting and standing for long periods of time.


Preferred QualificationÂ
  • Knowledge of Minnesota State College policies and procedures.
  • Prior experience using Workday, Minn State's ISRS (Integrated Student Record Systems) system-Payments and Billing Office functions, and the state SWIFT system.
  • Two or more years of direct experience with accounts payable.
  • Two or more years working in a customer service environment.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining a work environment that respects and values differences and diversity.
  • Knowledge of law, policies, procedures, and Legislative Auditor, Department of Finance and State Treasurer requirements for handling and depositing state funds.


Other Requirements

In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
