JOB SUMMARY

The campus seeks an experienced, highly motivated fundraising professional to serve as Executive Director of Development.

As we celebrate the 60th anniversary of our vibrant campus, we're not just reflecting on our rich history - we're laying the groundwork for an even more impactful future. With our cross-campus collaborators and the inspiring leadership of the Dean, we are also launching an ambitious fundraising campaign to elevate our programs, empower our students, and transform the community. This key role is a unique opportunity to be part of a transformative initiative that will define our next chapter.

Under the general direction of the Associate Vice Chancellor for Development in consultation with the Dean of Physical and Biological Sciences, the Executive Director of Development serves in a lead role to plan, develop, implement, and evaluate the major gift fund-raising program in the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences to secure and increase philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, and foundations for the divisional priorities. It is expected that this position will have close collaboration with the Innovation and Business Engagement Hub, the Office of Research, Foundation Relations, and the leadership and development teams of other academic divisions.

The Executive Director's primary responsibilities will include managing the division's relationship with current and prospective donors to the sciences. The Executive Director will prepare a strategic plan to develop and implement all components of a major gifts program, with specific emphasis on realizing major and principal gifts. The Executive Director is a part of the Science Dean's leadership team and manages a growing and highly specialized team that currently includes a Director of Development, and a Development Assistant. Additionally, this role partners with and guides fundraising teams at the Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, Seymour Center, CrEST/SIP and UC Observatories.

The Executive Director will design and implement comprehensive strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward the highest capacity individuals, build engagement of these individuals, create gift opportunities based on divisional priorities, formulate and coordinate fundraising strategies, proactively assess risk and determine appropriate stewardship plans for significant donors.

The Executive Director will partner with the dean to articulate and amplify the division's fundraising and campaign priorities. The Executive Director will engage high-level volunteers and academic leaders in connecting donors to the division to deepen their interest and involvement. The Executive Director will consult with the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Development, and other University Advancement colleagues to develop and implement donor strategies.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $159,000 - $179,000/year. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

70% - Division Development
  • With faculty, volunteers, and staff, identify new sources of potential gift support for the campus with a particular focus on divisional priorities. Identify, create, and execute cultivation and solicitation strategies with specific timetables for prospects (individuals, corporations, and foundations), working with academic leaders (the dean, department chairs, faculty), volunteers, and staff to increase and enhance the institution's success in private fundraising.
  • Develop and maintain a portfolio of approximately 90 prospective donors at the major or principal gift level, defined as individuals capable of contributing $50,000 or more. Specific goals for solicitation, cultivation, and discovery moves will be set on an annual basis through the operational planning process. Develop and implement 140+ meaningful, in-person interactions (moves) within the portfolio annually.
  • Personally cultivate, solicit, and coordinate stewardship for assigned donors and prospects. Work cooperatively with other development officers, deans, faculty, administrative personnel, and volunteers to develop and coordinate effective donor strategies. Prepare and edit proposals, presentations, and impact reports needed for the successful solicitation of prospective donors.
  • Serve as liaison for the division with the other units within University Advancement, including those focused on planned giving, annual giving, student success and strategic initiatives, innovation and business engagement, foundation relations, government & community relations, and donor & constituent engagement.
  • Devise and implement a stewardship program to ensure regular contact with major donors through annual impact reports and various stewardship and cultivation activities and events.
  • Oversee campus liaison and fundraising guidance to friends groups that are organized to assist with fundraising for the division.
  • Participate in University Advancement and division meetings, task forces, and special committees for projects as needed.
  • Develop strategies for, plan, and coordinate special events to reach, identify, and expand the base of major-gift-level donors.
  • Work closely with the -prospect research and management team to develop and maintain a pool of major gift prospects. This includes both reviewing and further researching individuals in the donor database and researching other individuals with capacity.

30% - Administration and Management
  • Manage a team of development professionals that may include development directors from the assistant to full level, a development assistant, and other professionals engaged in functions closely related to the development program. Responsible for selecting, training, mentoring, guiding, and directing staff as well as our broader team of junior fundraisers in Annual Giving, the Seymour Center, Center for Coastal Climate Resilience, SIP/CrEST, etc.
  • Working with the dean, the AVC for Development, and key senior staff, establish long- and short-range goals and objectives for the division's development program, and develop an annual development plan and long-term major gift prospect strategies designed to achieve these goals and objectives. Ensure that plans are appropriately coordinated with and communicated to other development and divisional staff.
  • Prepare and recommend for approval annual development budgets to University Advancement and the dean. Manage the approved development budgets in a prudent and effective manner, following campus policies and procedures.
  • Work with departments and accountants to answer questions about funds and ensure they have the ability to raise gifts and spend them appropriately. Ensure that major donors to gift funds in the division receive appropriate stewardship and that their gifts are being used appropriately. Manage the annual endowment payout process for the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences, ensuring that departments understand the process and are prepared to spend the payouts appropriately.
  • Ensure that annual appeals align with divisional priorities and best practices; connect departments and programs with appropriate departments in University Advancement to carry out their aims successfully.
  • Consult and effectively work with senior management, managers, and professional staff campus-wide and throughout University Advancement on specific initiatives. Model and promote effective teamwork and collegiality. Manage and facilitate information flow up, down, and across the organization.
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative workplace free from any form of harassment, intimidation, or unlawful discrimination.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Substantial experience in the design and implementation of complex development programs, emphasizing successful identification, cultivation, and securing of annual and major philanthropic commitments from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • Demonstrated success in the personal solicitation of major and principal gifts from individuals
  • Sound knowledge of the full spectrum of development principles and activities, including gift policies, solicitations, stewardship, donor recognition, administration, working with high-level volunteer committees, and the ability to apply this knowledge creatively to specific fundraising projects
  • An affinity for the division and a familiarity with the terminology associated with the discipline
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively with the dean, faculty, administrators, community leaders, volunteers, donors, and other staff, including people of differing temperaments, socioeconomic backgrounds and political/ethical philosophies
  • Superior communication skills to express concisely and persuasively, both orally and in writing, the mission of the campus and the fundraising goals of the campus and the division
  • Demonstrated aility to recruit volunteer support and work with colleagues to support the efforts of high-level fundraising volunteers
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop a high-performing development team, ensuring all team members are prepared and productive in cultivating and soliciting private philanthropy for the division
  • Ability to listen carefully to what people are saying and translate their interests and resources into gifts needed by the campus
  • Experience formulating and managing an operational budget
  • Effective computer skills with experience using word processing, spreadsheets, databases and publishing applications and databases to create, retrieve, and compile up-to-the-minute documents and historical information for reports and for donor research


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) or Master's degree
  • Experience working with a major comprehensive campaign, especially in higher education
  • Knowledge of planned giving techniques, including an understanding of current tax laws relevant to charitable giving and estate planning
  • Knowledge and understanding of a university setting, its people and programs, and its educational and fundraising objectives; experience working at a public institution of higher education or within the UC system


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
